As we have done for every fashion season since 2005, we have compiled the best spring 2021 fashion trends for women over 40. However, just like everything else in 2020, the Spring 2021 Fashion Week Collections were a bit unusual. There were many more virtual shows and lookbook-type photo presentations than ever before. Fashion Week has been heading in this direction anyway, as many designers understand the power of imagery, video and the internet.
However, I am happy to report that many of the shows still went on in New York, London, Milan and Paris…only without the bustling crowds, spectators and parties like the past fashion week shows. The designers persevered and presented wonderful collections amidst social distancing. Perhaps they were able to concentrate without too many distractions during lockdown.
The trends for Spring 2021 included comfortable fashion (a sign of the times) as well as bold, creative and expressive designs. There were trends that are more appropriate for younger women, but fortunately many for women of all ages. Here are our picks of 9 of the best Spring fashion trends for women over 40 for 2021.
Best Spring 2021 Fashion Trends For Women Over 40
1. Fancy Fleece
Were you a fan of joggers and sweats in 2020? Well get ready to dress up in fancy fleece for Spring 2021. From ruffled sleeves and monochromatic sophistication at Max Mara to matching sporty sets at Rag and Bone to graphic pattern screen print skirt ensembles at Prada, sweats for spring 2021 are both cozy and chic!
2. Big Pants
Here is another super comfortable trend to wear in 2021. The big pants trend reigned supreme. Slouchy pants hit the runways with a fold-over waistband and suspenders at Isabel Marant, sleek and oversized preppy chinos at The Row and slouchy tailored trousers in bold tomato red at Fendi.
3. Super Prints
Go bold this spring and wear one of these expressive and colorful prints! Designers did not opt for tiny florals but went supersized! The designers are just like many of us who want to end our hibernation and look forward to breaking out next spring. Find these in-your-face super prints (pictured above from left to right) at Christopher John Rogers, Dolce and Gabbana and Valentino.
4. Textured Fabrics
From plissé to pleats to wrinkles to ruching, textured fabrics played a big role in the spring 2021 collections. If you kept some Issay Mayake (or are still a fan) you’re in luck! Light fabrics with texture were shown on an easy jacket at Tods, on a plissé bold print skirt set at Versace and on a pair of easygoing mint pants and a white tank at Coperni.
5. Silky Pajamas
We love this trend and are glad it is still going strong. These silky pajamas are not only for lounging around the house! These sets are also perfect as cocktail attire, day wear and beach cover-ups. Tom Ford showed a bold black tropical print with a similar mixed print top over swimwear. The classic leopard print pajamas at Naeem Khan, or the intense peony pink set at Lutz Huelle are fabulous for cocktails. You can always wear the pajama pieces as separates, too.
6. Tunics With Pants
Do you have trouble deciding between wearing a dress or pants? Tunics with pants are the answer! Spring 2021 offered many options on the trend from a mod tunic and bell pant set in mustard at Richard Malone, to an all white tunic with pants under a menswear style jacket at Michael Kors, to a dreamy sheer tunic over a tank and oversized trousers at Fendi. Take your pick!
7. Easy Day Dresses
Dresses for day were shown in a variety of styles from shirt styles, to ruffles with many designers showing asymmetrical hems. Maybe because there is still some uncertainty of what direction we are going. One thing the dresses had in common was ease. The 2021 woman wants to slip on one easy day dress and walk out the door. Find ruffles and asymmetry at Ulla Johnson, a cape shouldered check shirt dress at Altuzarra and tucks and pleats on full-skirted sundresses at Jason Wu.
8. Ballet Flats
There were not a lot of new shoe trends this season, but amidst the slides and Birkenstocks, one form of slippers stood out! The ballet flat is a great option for women over 40 this spring. You can still enjoy foot comfort without the clunkiness of flatforms or sneakers. Ballet flats were shown in mesh at Christian Dior, white leather at Simone Rocha and a bright orange mixed embellished pair at Marina Moscone.
9. Water Bottle Bags
We got used to taking long walks in 2020, so designers have prepared you for next spring. Stay hydrated and carry one of these water bottle bags! It is a new essential. Designers including Givenchy, Alyx and Fendi showed water bottle bags in everything from gleaming metal to leather and straw.
