The Bright Colors Trending For Fall and How to Style Them

Now that we are relishing the autumn season, let’s take a minute to really think about fall fashion. I know it’s easy to get excited about the rich, dark colors we always see during this season like brown, burgundy, camel, hunter green, gray, and of course, black. As much as that color story plays deeply into my fall wardrobe collection, I don’t want to write off the unexpected brighter color palette that can also be incorporated into your fall looks. Bright colors for fall work just as well as the darker colors and they ensure your fall looks will stay light and bright during the cooler days. Let’s look at some fall brights that will work for everyone, especially women over 50.

Bright Pants And Skirts For Fall

I love unexpected, brightly colored pants for the cool weather. As black is always a go-to for most, adding a punchy color on the bottom brings a fresh take on any fall outfit. It’s easy to incorporate a pair of basic silhouette pants that is universally flattering. Something like this pair of sculpted bootcut pants can be worn with any oversized, chunky knit sweater. Now for this outfit, I would opt for black on the top, as I love the combination of black and pink. However, if you are feeling adventurous, try these pants with a mustard yellow sweater and pair of Kelly-green loafers for a color-block inspired outfit that could leave others envious.

I know it may be too early to be thinking about what to wear for your upcoming holiday get-togethers, but what’s the fun in waiting? If you want to steal the scene during your festive celebrations, why not go for this full-length pleated tulle skirt? It’s absolutely beautiful and can be dressed up or down. Wear it with a graphic tee and combat boots for a casual look or a silky button front shirt and ballet flats for a formal balletcore look.

Bright Tops, Dresses And Coats For Fall

A top or a dress is a terrific way to incorporate a bright color into your fall wardrobe. Sweaters are always an excellent choice, as they can be worn from early fall all the way to through the springtime, which makes them great investment pieces. A basic like this zip high-neck sweater is an exceptional one to have in your closet. You can layer it with an oversized blazer or overcoat, or just wear it on its own with a pair of wide leg jeans, a silk slip skirt or even sweatpants for a casual look.

Although dresses are not my thing, they are practically a seasonal uniform for a lot of women I know. If you always opt for dresses, why not go for a brightly colored one? This periwinkle mock neck dress is one that I came across and believe would be beautiful if worn for fall. Go super edgy with some moto boots and a leather jacket or style this super-feminine dress with a whimsy overcoat and pair of Mary Jane heels or flats.

Bright Colored Shoes For Fall

This one is easy! I’ve literally worn an all-black outfit, and my shoes were the statement piece of the look. A shoe that offers a pop of color to an outfit can be an invaluable piece to add to your wardrobe. I will be the first to admit that my post-pandemic fashion has evolved from my pre-pandemic looks. With the addition of children and a whole new day-to-day routine, comfort is key for me. So when I found these classic Reebok sneakers in this bright yellow, I fell in love.  I would wear a pair like this day-in and day-out, while running errands, taking the kids to the park or honestly even for a casual day at the office.

Now my life isn’t always sneakers and sweats, so when I do want to get dolled up, I still love a bold shoe. That’s why something like these red, crocodile knee high boots make me swoon. Pair these with a sweater dress in a rich brown or even a camel color and gold jewelry for accents and you’re good to go.

Bright Colors for Fall Expert Style Tips

  1. Play it up or play it down. When you decide to add pops of color to your wardrobe for fall, you can make that one piece the standout of your outfit, or you can incorporate other bright colors to create a color-blocking effect to your look. I love the idea of adding two or more bright colors to a look to keep it bright, fun and unexpected.
  2. Thick fabrics and chunky knits look best. When you are looking for pieces that are brightly colored for this season, substantial fabrics make the look more luxurious. Look for supple and soft chunky knits in sweaters and heavy weighted pants, as thinner fabrics could come off as cheap and chintzy.
  3. Mix and match. I know it’s easy to think of this trend as just that: a trend, which can make you not want to invest in many brightly colored pieces for fall. However, having an ample amount of color in your fall wardrobe keeps it looking fresh and airy. Yes, even in the chilly weather! Even though it’s easy to gravitate toward the dark colors, try to incorporate a good mix of bright colors in your closet.
