If you ask me to define the characteristics of the fall season, I’d start with the obvious: cool weather, the leaves changing on the trees, spiced coffee… But then comes the fun stuff: pumpkin patch visits (with the accompanying donuts), scary movie season, and of course fall fashion! Fall fashion is my absolute favorite part of this season. I always use it as a time to reset, decide how I want to recreate my style and decide what trends I want to look to for style inspiration. This year is no different, and with all of the super-fun trends that women over 50 can rock this year, I want to talk about a tried and true one that never really goes out of style. Let’s look at the fall 2023 leather fashion trend and some exciting options that you can try right now!
The Fall 2023 Leather Fashion Trend
Leather Tops And Jackets
An effortless way to start wearing this trend for the fall is to start at the top. You can never go wrong with a classic leather moto jacket. I found this genuine leather one from one of my new favorite shopping sites, Quince.com. It’s super affordable and in true Qunice nature, 100% authentic leather. The fitted style, epaulette shoulder details and brushed hardware make it the perfect gateway piece to start off or add to your leather collection. I also love that it comes in other color tones including cognac, chocolate brown and burgundy besides the black.

If you want something a little more trendy you can opt for this oversized, button up faux leather shacket. Wear it as a topper to a fall sweater dress, a pair of jeans and lightweight sweater or throw it on over your work outfit to add some edge. This piece is great because it’s super affordable and can fit into almost any budget. The cognac hue is also one of my favorite color options for leather pieces.
Leather Skirts And Pants
If you look at the pants section of my closet after I’ve organized my fall pieces, you’ll see that I have a pretty extensive collection of faux leather pants in multiple silhouettes and colors. Leather pants are an option to pretty much replace your jeans, and they make any outfit more interesting. If you don’t have any in your closet, the best place to start is a pair of basic black faux leather pants. These wide-leg ones can take you through the season and can be a closet staple for many years to come. My favorite fit now is the high-rise with a wide leg, so these are perfect if you are like me and are trying to conceal a little more in the mid-section.
If skirts are your preference, there are plenty to choose from. I found this A.L.C. pleated midi that has some really fun and unexpected details. The asymmetrical cut and pleat details make this skirt the statement piece of any outfit. So, I’d pair this with a simple ivory, crew neck sweater and some tall leather boots in the same leather tone as the skirt to create a subtle but luxurious vibe.
Finally, you can’t go wrong with a classic pencil skirt. The sleek, straight fit serves as an outfit base for for any occasion. I always like a pencil skirt paired with a simple button front skirt and some bold jewelry; a classic look that has survived decades of fashion cycles. You can’t get any more classic than this skirt from J.Crew. It’s a little unexpected if you choose the ivory color. But the neutral color still allows for you to play around with different styling options to fit your own personal preferences. I would stick to a neutral top like camel or navy and add a pair of simple and classic loafers to finish the look. Or you can go bold and do a mustard yellow, vibrant pink or Kelly green top half to keep the look playful.
Leather Dresses And Jumpsuits
When I think of a leather dress or jumpsuit, I must admit that I don’t always think of them for everyday wear. However, the options out there are incredibly accessible and versatile and can be worn to the office, as day wear or for an evening outing. I recently wore a version of this faux leather sheath dress to my company party. Though this one is black, I got mine in brown and styled it with a pair of chocolate brown suede boots and some wooden statement earrings with gold accents. I got so many compliments and felt super cute and chic without feeling too dressed up. This was a day party and I feel the brown color kept it a little more casual-looking but still upscale.
This next option is a total wildcard, but I absolutely love it. If you want to make a bold statement, how about trying this faux leather utility jumpsuit? Everything from the silhouette to the bold blue color of the jumpsuit makes it such a special piece. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re a risk-taker, this is the right choice for you.
Fall Leather Trend Style Tips
- Not all leather is created equal. As nice as it is to own genuine leather pieces, unfortunately that may not be realistic for your budget. But that’s OK! There are so many faux leather options (or vegan leather as some may call it) that look and feel incredibly authentic. Pay attention to the look, feel and quality of the faux leather when picking out pieces. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how nicely they will hold up season after season.
- Neutral colors always work, but don’t be afraid to stray. Basics are always a must-have but it’s important to try something fun and unexpected. Similar to the blue utility jumpsuit that I mentioned above, trying something bold and different will keep you out of a style rut. I have some really nice faux leather pieces in green, gold, and pink and I wear them just as much as my black pieces.
- Splurge if you can. I don’t think there should be any reservation regarding investing in a genuine leather piece. Many of these styles are classic pieces, so spending some extra dollars on a leather moto jacket or a pair of leather pants that fit you like a glove is definitely encouraged. Happy shopping!
