Best Ways to Wear the “Balletcore” Trend for Women Over 50

You may have heard of balletcore (the trend started last year) but it has taken hold and now is stronger than ever. What is the balletcore? You guessed it, this is a fashion trend inspired by ballet attire, including wrap tops, tulle skirts, tights, leggings and ballet slippers as well as embellishments such as satin ribbons and bows.

Balletcore is both functional and pretty. Many of the pieces, such as the knits and flowy skirts, allow you to move (or even dance if you will) and the ballerina ribbons and bows are simply elegant. That’s why I believe the trend is so popular. Besides, every woman (at least the ones I know) would love to be a ballerina, even if they’re over 50.

But does the trend work for more mature women or should we leave the tulle skirts and tights to the younger set? I’d definitely say to nix the leg warmers and the “tights as pants” look, but besides that there is definitely a lot of options when it comes to balletcore fashion for women over 50.

Here are some easy ways to wear the balletcore trend and not look like you are trying too hard.

Wrap Tops

A wrap top or sweater is the simplest way to get the balletcore look in a sophisticated way. You may have even kept one of these cozy and flattering sweaters in your closet from decades ago. It’s time to wear it again! Wrap tops work better now that high waisted pants and jeans are back in style. Besides that, if you acquire a wrap top now there is a wide variety of silhouettes to choose from including oversized, faux wrap and longer knit tops and sweaters. Get one in a soft color like cream or pretty ballet slipper pink. Or get a wrap in basic black, you know, for those days when you are “at practice”.

Ballet Flats, Bow Shoes and Ankle Wraps

Ballet flats, box toes, bow shoes and heels with ribbond and ankle wraps are another way to add a little balletcore to your wardrobe. From easy-to-wear flats for day to ribbon and chiffon ankle wrapped high heel pumps for evening, there is a wonderful selection of ballerina inspired shoes available. Pick a pair that makes you want to dance.

Full Skirts

You don’t have to wear a tutu to get the balletcore look! Full satin and tulle midi or maxi skirts, flowy jersey wrap skirts, skirts and silky bias cut slip skirts are some options for women over 50. You can dress these skirts up or down, but I like them with a fitted scoop neck top for that dance leotard vibe.

Accessories with Ribbons and Bows

If you don’t want to go full out ballerina, you may like to wear a piece of jewelry, handbags or hair accessories with, tulle grain or shiny satin bows. One last option is to simply brush on esse ballet slippers nail polish and call it a day!

How To Style Balletcore

Casual Balletcore Outfit for Women Over 50

Here’s how I will be wearing balletcore this year and it’s so easy. Wear a wrap top with high waist jeans and a pair of satin ballet flats. I like the look of ballet flats peeking out of under wide leg pants because it is a more modern approach.

Dressy Balletcore Outfit for Women Over 50

Get ready to dance for your next wedding party or event. A midi tulle skirt worn with a scoop neck top is comfortable and appropriate option. For this outfit I went all out and included ankle wrap pumps and a tulle bow bag in ballet pink. However you can accessorize with simple pieces, or wear one or both balletcore accessories with a solid color dress.
