When was the last time you showed your hair stylist a photo of a hair cut you liked? Many if us tend to just let our stylist cut our hair the same as the last time. But I realized it has been too long since I took a look at celebrities and pictures of women’s hairstyles to show my stylist what I like. It’s always a good idea, because they usually can emulate a look and tell you how it can work for your hair and face if you show them a photo. Right now I feel I can use a hairstyle update. So I did some research found 5 of what I believe to be the best hairstyles for women over 50.
Best Hairstyles for Women Over 50
Now that I am well over 50 I can see how my hair, just like so many women I know, has changed as I have aged. My hair is much thinner and receding around the temples (yikes). And since I need to color it to hide the gray, the texture of my hair is dryer and more brittle than before. Even friends of mine who have thick hair have similar problems with their hair thinning and/or getting coarser as they age.

It’s a given that using the proper hair care products on aging hair helps to keep it moisturized, swingy and shiny. Yet finding an easy-to-wear haircut that does not accentuate thinning hair is my latest quest. It was difficult to narrow it down, but I found 5 of my favorite hairstyles for women over 50.
Easy To Wear and Stylish Hairstyles
One thing all of these styles have in common is that they are stylish and not trendy and will not make you look like you are trying too hard. You can also take an element of one style, such as the bangs or layers and wear it shorter or longer. If you have a good hairstylist, they will customize it for you.
I found short, medium and long lengths, with and without bangs. These styles could work for a variety of natural hair textures from fine to thick and straight to curly. Hopefully one will inspire you as they did for me. Take a look!
My 5 Favorite Hairstyles for Women Over 50
Jennifer Anniston: Long Layers
Women over 50 can still rock long hair. Take it from Jennifer Anniston, who’s iconic hairstyles have been the source of many of our haircuts. The slightly off-center part, and face-framing layers gives her hair a soft look. Her highlights look amazing, but any color hair can work with this style.
Cate Blanchett: Bob
The reason I like Cate Blanchett‘s bob, is because it looks so stylish for a short haircut. The slight wave and sweeping one side over her ear gives it an automatic asymmetric and modern look.
Diane Keaton: Blunt Cut
This simple style on Diane Keaton shows how straighter hair works in a medium length. The blunt cut edges are clean and chic. The minimal side layering and the indefinite side part are ideal for women with thinning hair.
Emma Thompson: Pixie
If you like to wear your hair short, or are considering cutting it short, then do it in style! That is the key to short haircuts looking chic and not dowdy for women over 50. Emma Thompson‘s long, soft bangs do just that. This hairstyle will make you feel like your hair is still long, but will give you the ease of a short pixie.
Halle Berry: Bangs
If you are considering bangs on any hair length, these long wispy uneven bangs on Halle Berry may be the answer. What I like about her bangs (besides hiding wrinkles) is that you probably can push them to the side to give you options and not have to feel committed to always wearing bangs. But you just may love them!
