It’s Hip To Be Square (Necklines): Best Ways To Wear Them

Remember the square necklines we all wore in the 90s? They’re back and are still exceptionally flattering, since they can create the illusion of a longer neck and provide contrast to your natural curves.

Square necks are also a great way to show a little decolletage and collarbone without needing to resort to a strapless bra or other contraption (a standard balconette style bra works perfectly), and they are a great way to change things up if you normally stick with v-necks, scoop-necks, or crew-necks.

Here are some of our favorite ways to rock the 90s redux square neck trend right now…

A Sleek Square Neck Tee

Give your basic v-necks and scoop neck tees a break and try a square neck. Keep it simple with one of these classic options from Old Navy, Athleta or Lauren’s favorite, Pumiey. Simple square neck tees or tanks make a great backdrop for a fabulous necklace.

A Square Neck Blouse with Poet Sleeves

If you want to stay covered in the summer but still keep things breezy, a flowy blouse like this one from J.Crew is just about perfect. Keep the rest of the look simple with wide-leg pants or shorts and sandals and enjoy!

A Square Neck Maxi Dress

Add a bit of drama to your basic maxi dresses with a squared off neckline. We love this one by Paige — it’s the perfect base for all kinds of accessories. Belt it, throw on a long necklace, wear strappy heels, cute slides, or even Birkenstocks with it. You’ll wear it all summer long.

A Square Neckline With A Split

While this style isn’t a true square neck, it has a similar appeal. Try a squared off split neck for a bit more visual interest. After all, isn’t this Allegra K. (via Target) top more interesting than your standard black tee? A top with a bit of visual interest at the neckline is one of the easiest things to throw on with jeans, cargos or anything really and it feels more special than something more basic.

A Square Neck Ribbed Cardigan

If you love a good cardigan, why not try a square neck option? This one from the Gap has a great 90s feel with the covered button closures plus it is less than $20, but there are versions of this look at all price points out right now. Wear it on its own or over your favorite summer dress.

A Square Neck Linen Piece

There’s nothing as perfectly summery as a linen dress, and this button-front square belted number from Banana Republic is ideal for “fancy casual” type of occasions or a vacation day or evening when you want to look utterly chic in pictures. We’re also fans of this square neck dress from Boden, particularly the gorgeous red-orange shade.

One quick note on wearing square neck styles if you’re over 50 — anything with tons of embellishment, shirring or ruching, an empire waist-line or oversize puffy sleeves can be a lot of (costumey) look, so perhaps leave the peasant-inspired square neck tops and dresses to the younger generations.
