What To Wear On A Rainy Spring Day: Stay Dry and Look Chic

Spring has sprung and while most of us get to leave the snow and ice behind, a new fashion challenge arises. When it’s cloudy, drizzly or downright pouring but not quite freezing, here’s what to wear on a rainy spring day to stay dry and still look chic.

What To Wear On A Rainy Spring Day

You need a great spring jacket or two, a cute but sturdy umbrella, and shoes that won’t get wrecked if you happen to step into a puddle. Here are some of our favorite spring pieces that you won’t want to save for a rainy day.

The Perfect Trench

It’s a classic for a reason. While investing in the traditional Burberry trench might not be logical for most of us, a neutral trench is a great wardrobe staple if you live somewhere that gets a decent amount of rain. Check out this khaki trench from ASOS Design. It’s less than $100 but has plenty of swagger.

The High Tech Windbreaker

When you want something more casual or a little sportier than a trench, this is where a windbreaker in technical fabric or similar piece comes in handy. As an added bonus, these types of jackets often fold up into almost nothing, making them a great travel item as well. We loved this one from The North Face – and it has a hood, which comes in clutch for serious showers.

The Lightweight Parka for A Rainy Spring Day

For chillier days and climates, a slim cut parka or more streamlined quilted jacket like this one from Gallery works well. Size up if you want to be able to layer underneath.

The Spring Boot

Actual rubber rain boots aren’t always the most practical solution, but at the same time, you need to keep your feet dry! This is where trail running shoes come in handy, at least for casual days. Sorel makes some runners that are downright chic if you enjoy the chunky sneaker look, or go for something more traditional and sleek with Blondo’s monochromatic styles.

The Ideal Umbrella

The cheap umbrellas you pick up from the drugstore or wherever are fine in an emergency downpour situation, but if you live in a climate with regular rainstorms it is a good idea to invest in a solid and sturdy umbrella. Something like this Repel Umbrella will hold up to both wind and rain.

The Rain Hat

Hats can be a challenge, but if you want to protect your hair and makeup from the rain they can be a necessity. Ball caps can work for a casual look, or dress it up a bit with a water resistant bucket hat like this one from Athleta.

The Rainproof Bag

You already know that a rainy day is not the ideal time to bring out your favorite suede handbag or really any kind of bag that needs special treatment. Patent leather, however, is perfectly rainproof. This $16 patent bag from Ulisty via Amazon is the perfect inexpensive option and it comes in a whole range of colors, or go a little higher end with one of the MZ Wallace quilted patent handbags.
