Remember That Brows Frame The Face

Perhaps the easiest way to make yourself look awake is to do your brows. Just a touch of powder (we like Anastasia) applied with a small angled brush or brow pencil can open up your eyes and make you look more awake. There’s always the fashionista favorite Glossier Boy Brow for a fuller look too. Getting micro-blading done or the lower-commitment option of having your eyebrows tattooed is also an option, and then you really will be able to wake up with perfect brows.

Getting your eyelashes tinted or simply figuring out what mascara and eyeliner work best for you can also be a game changer. Consider getting a pro consultation (you can do them online now via Zoom or similar) to learn how to do great winged eyeliner or even to learn how to do false lashes if you are into that look. There are also plenty of tutorials available on YouTube and TikTok for you to experiment with.

Get A Good Collection Of Underpinnings

You’ve probably heard this a million times by now, but having a solid foundation makes every outfit look better. While the right style of bra, underwear, shapewear, or Spanx is always an individual choice, finding the ones that fit you and investing in quality can make all the difference in your wardrobe. The right underpinnings can also improve your posture, decrease back and shoulder pain, and even make you look thinner!

If that doesn’t sell you on finding the ideal undergarments for your needs and figure, we’re not sure what will. Get measured (some stores offer Zoom fitting sessions now!) and regularly re-assess the state of your lingerie drawer. We suggest doing this once every few years or more often if your body has changed significantly. You’ll be happier, more comfortable, and look all the better for it. Don’t know where to start? Soma has some affordable options, and we love the vanishing back style for comfort that doesn’t look boring.

Make Friends With Your Tailor And Cobbler – Or Get Good At DIY

We’ve all had those pieces that are just about right or almost perfect but need a little extra work to make them amazing. For instance, a tailor can hem a skirt to the ideal length for you, fix scuffs and change the sole on boots or heels to one that’s more wearable, permanently cuff pants for a little extra panache, or crop sleeves to bracelet length to show off your jewelry. This can take a piece from acceptable to awesome!

If you don’t have a tailor nearby or are DIY-inclined in general, you don’t have to be particularly good at sewing to learn how to change out buttons, use hem tape to adjust sleeve and pant lengths, or otherwise make small tweaks to pieces that need a little something extra. Pick up a home tailoring kit and find some video tutorials and get started!

Select A Style Signature Or Calling Card

Whether that is a signature accessory, a favorite lipstick shade, or a color that you always wear and feel confident in general, by the time you are in your forties you probably have a few go-to’s. Take them to the next level by investing in the best possible versions of those items!

If you love leopard print, for example, get a fabulous leopard print coat or luxurious cashmere scarf like this one from Sofia. Or if crimson lipstick is your go-to, get your favorite shade of red from a high-end brand with elegant packaging like Tom Ford or Guerlain.

Establish Your Uniform

This is different from your style calling card and it can change with the seasons and trends. Your uniform should be a silhouette that works for you and can be a sort of seasonal capsule that makes getting dressed for the average day quick and simple, but still allows you to feel confident and like your best self.

Key considerations for a style uniform include your lifestyle (do you get dirty at your job or are you constantly chasing after kids? Walk for miles in a given day? Spend most of your time on Zoom?) as well as what makes you feel awesome. For example, if you love flowy tunics, there’s a version of those that will work for every season like this Gap popover. You can just switch up the fabric, neckline and color to suit current trends. Need a cinched waist? Some kind of belt will work with almost anything (and if you’re going to wear it daily, you might as well splurge on one from Dior). And so on…
