What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist collection of clothing that can be put together in a variety of ways to cover different occasions. These easy-to-coordinate wardrobe basics will not only save you money, but also the stress of deciding what to wear every day. A capsule wardrobe makes getting dressed much easier.

Or you may want to start with these 10 pieces and then add others from your closet to suit your own personal style. 1.

The Basic Black Turtleneck

If you don’t already own one, get one now! A black turtleneck is an ideal base layer. Besides being super flattering, it keeps you warm and provides a wonderful backdrop for scarves and jewelry. Wear it with jeans, trousers and skirts. In the fall a black turtleneck looks chic under blazers and a classic trend coat too. You can choose a slim fitting rib knit, or a looser cut in wool, cotton or cashmere which I recommend for its durability. I like a basic, slightly loose style like this Mott & Bow The Cashmere Turtleneck Willow Sweater because it is lightweight and so comfortable.

2.

White Oxford Shirt

I feel like a broken record talking about how every woman needs a basic white button down shirt because it is so versatile. Wear it over the black turtleneck with a pair of jeans, under a jacket or oven over a dress. Tuck it into pants and skirts or wear it over your bottoms and belt it to get a peplum look. You can choose an oversize or fitted style. I like this Vineyard Vines Oxford Button-Up Shirt with its slightly larger collar and because it’s made of stretch cotton for comfort.

3.

A Fun Print Top

A capsule wardrobe usually consists of basics, but I like to throw in a print top that you can dress up or down. A scarf print or paisley is a classic and this stunning L’AGENCE Tyler Butterfly Print Silk Shirt fits the bill.

4.

The Tweed Blazer

A blazer is the perfect piece of outerwear for fall. It looks polished and it can work for the office over trousers, a skirt or a dress, or casually with your blue jeans. I adore this Cinq à Sept Khloe Confetti Tweed Blazer with its multiple colors woven into mostly black. Other blazer options are plaid, herringbone, houndstooth or checks in neutral colors like greys or black and cream. A slightly oversized blazer that you can wear over thin sweaters but is not so bulky under an overcoat is the way to go. Find one that flatters you and you feel comfortable wearing.

5.

Great-Fitting Denim Jeans

Finding the right pair of denim jeans can be challenging. That’s why I suggest you try Mott & Bow. They offer affordable premium denim in very basic styles that won’t look like you are trying too hard. I can attest their jeans are super comfortable and stretchy, they keep their shape and I wear them almost every day. One of my favorite styles for this fall capsule wardrobe is the Mott & Bow Women’s Slim Boyfriend Ridge Jeans.

6.

Black Pants

Black trousers in any style that flatters you, from straight leg to wide leg, or a black skirt (if you don’t like pants) are a must-have basic for your fall wardrobe. Wear the pants with the turtleneck as a classic base layer under a blazer or trench coat, or on its own. Wear the black bottoms with your fun top or white shirt for two more very different looks. I like trouser style like these Halogen® High Waist Wide Leg Pants from Nordstrom.

7.

A Knit Sweater Dress

A sleek midi sweater dress in black, grey or a rich dark color like this burgundy C by Bloomingdale’s Cashmere Crewneck Cashmere Midi Dress is another must-have wardrobe basic. You can wear this dress under the blazer, or with the white shirt or fun blouse as a jacket or belted peplum-style. You can dress up a dress like this with statement jewelry for a party. Since it is a knit, it won’t wrinkle and it makes a great travel piece since it is so versatile. You can find similar dresses in looser and flare silhouettes that flatter your body type.

8.

Black Booties

One pair of shoes that every woman needs for fall is a pair of black booties. I think a mid heeled black pair like these Ann Taylor Skinny Heeled Leather Booties are perfect. They will look fabulous with everything in this capsule collection from the dress to casual jeans. You may have a pair of black booties but take another look at them because you may need an update!

9.

Classic Loafers

Loafers are certainly a classic but they are also totally trending for fall 2023. So you can fill in your capsule collection and also be trendy. There are a wide variety of loafers available from platform and lug sole to embellished and mixed media. A basic pair with a sturdy walking sole like these Nordstrom Lafayette Penny Loafers will work with everything in this capsule wardrobe and you can wear them for years to come.

10.

The Trench Coat

A trench coat is a fall essential. Find a classic style in black, tan or grey that is roomy enough to wear over a blazer or sweater like this Bernardo Modern Trench Coat. It will look super chic over the black turtleneck, the scarf print blouse, or crisp white collar shirt, the sweater dress and everything in this collection.
