Spring is here, and now’s the time to take a closer look at the spring trends. That’s why we inspected the Spring 2022 Fashion week runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris to take a look at the trends. Indeed there are a lot! It seems the designers are looking forward to Spring 2022 with a great sense of exuberance, with many of the trends from the previous season continuing on steroids. They showed us brighter neon colors, extreme cutouts, body-baring sheerness, more midriffs, lower slung skirts and pants and tinier bras under bigger jackets.
Now, we don’t ever dictate what you should or shouldn’t wear, but we have come to know what our peers (women in midlife) actually would like to wear. So we weeded through the trends we know you will never wear, and found some fresh and exciting fashion looks with some classics returning for Spring 2022. Take a look at 9 of the best Spring 2022 fashion trends for women over 40 you will want to wear!

1. Check This Out – Gingham
Even if you are not a big fan of gingham, you’ve got to check this out! Michael Kors showed perfectly collectable classic-shaped sundresses and shirts in black and white gingham, Brandon Maxwell went super-sized and modern in jumbo, bright colored gold checks, and gingham got glossy with sequins and shine at Carolina Herrera.
2. Crochet
Crochet was the one texture you could not miss this season. We are not fans of the open weave beach cover up crochet, but the artfully-crafted styles caught our attention. Intricate tops at Alberta Ferretti could also be layered over other pieces, Altuzarra juxtaposed styles with a black crochet neck piece over a menswear style suit, and Chloe showed us a tightly-woven crochet maxi in confetti colors.
3. Dramatic Draping
Gorgeous dramatic goddess-like draping is not new, but we like it because it is flattering and forgiving. Rick Owens used dramatic soft draping in sharp contrast to his edgy runway looks, Alberta Ferretti layered gorgeous waterfall hues on a sweeping gown and Oscar de la Renta showed hombre colored draped dresses to flatter every figure.
4. Popcorn Textures and Froufrou
Light and airy “popcorn” textures added a fresh new look to the runways for spring 2022. From a light sheer popcorn “chubby” jacket at Prabal Gurung, to lavender sequin froufrou embellishments over crisp white at Jil Sander, to glamorous glittering texture at Givenchy, these tactile and frilly textures are just right for spring.
5. Highlighter Marker Colors
Bold colors made their “mark” on the runway in saturated luminous color. A brilliant lime dress with matching mules walked the runway at Bottega Veneta, Rodarte showed us our favorite Fountain Of 30 color in highlighter marker blue, and Alexander McQueen punctuated the runway with an intense and vibrant bold pink pant suit with black buttons.
6. (Not So Mini) Skirt Suits
Micro-minis ruled the runways for Spring 2022. But before you look away, many of the designers gave us not-so mini skirt suit options. These skirts on these suits hit just above the knee. Moschino went retro with a fun print classic 60s style suite with a bow, Chanel showed easy to wear a-line skirt suits in colorful textures (among other iconic suits), and there were impeccably tailored classic suits in a multitude of styles at Christian Dior.
7. Tails and Trains
The models appeared to be growing tails for Spring 2022. Tails and trains added drama and movement to many of the looks on the runways. At Loewe, a somewhat sporty colorblocked draped look had billowing side trains that hit the floor. Peter Do contrasted a structured olive structured pant suit with soft scarf-style tails peeking out under the jacket, and Burberry showed straps and bundles of fringe as tails to add a lot of movement to an all back look.
8. Psychedelic Prints
Designers showed optically amazing psychedelic prints this season. Brandon Maxwell delighted the eyes with swirly graphics in bright pinks and oranges, Dries Van Noten went wild with a show-stopping deep watercolor print on a midi dress, and Christian Dior went neon flower-power with an oversized surreal graphic screen print on a neon skirt. Wow, man!
9. Pants Under Skirts
This trend is exciting because we can get totally creative, and luckily the designers have shown us the way. Pants under skirts looked chic with crisp stovepipe pants contrasting fluid silky dresses at Jil Sander. Alberta Ferretti layered slim pants under a high slit wrap skirt with a work-worthy blazer for an ultra cool look and Chanel showed a light and airy flare print skirt over semi-sheer wide leg pants with a soft fluttery blouse.

Love this, thank you!
You’re so welcome!
Wish I had the funds for at least one of those gowns…
Not for me. I’m more un-dramatic but I don’t go places where I could actually wear any of these especially these days. It’s fun to see the creativity and imagination.
Being petite and a little chubby, I’m staying away from big bold prints, but I like the pantsuits with the blazers.
Fun to see the fashions and get ideas!
