Oversized Modified Menswear Shirts Trend for Spring 2023: Splurge or Steal

One of my favorite Spring 2023 fashion trends is the oversized modified menswear shirts trend. Yes, oversized shirts are not new, however for spring the designers added many updated twists on the look, including balloon sleeves, huge cuffs, sharp pointed collars, embroidered details, waist defining features, ruffles, pintucks and too many more details to name!

Now your basic menswear shirt is no longer so basic, and it becomes more of a statement top for spring 2023. This makes dressing so easy because you can just slip on one of these oversized shirt over pants, jeans or skirts and go! It is one of the best trends for women over 50 to try this spring.

We spotted this trend on the runways, and now you can shop for designer modified menswear shirts in stores. I found five incredible designer looks to splurge on this season, or you can pick up a very similar shirt for a steal. Take a look and you can decide if you’d like to splurge or steal.

The Balloon Sleeve Shirt

Oversized, puffed or balloon sleeves on a basic white shirt are a subtle approach to this trend. Brunello Cucinelli’s cotton-blend poplin shirt is impeccable, with a sharp contrasting patch of dark fabric under one side of the collar and mother of pearl buttons. The price tag for this beautiful shirts is $1,550, so if you don’t have that much just laying around, you can pick up this Remidoo women’s collared puff long sleeve button down shirt for only $26 on Amazon.

The Embroidered Trim Oversized Shirt

Some designers added feminine details such as lace and embroidered elements and trims to their big shirts. Case in point is this Stella McCartney broderie anglaise crepe shirt for $1,250. This is a gorgeous shirt with a beautiful drape is one you will cherish for years. But if you want to test out the trend, this lace-detail shirt from H&M will give you a similar look for only $75 that you won’t have to love it forever.

The Two Tone Modified Menswear Shirt

This shirt is such an amusing twist on a basic business shirt. This Interior duo oversized two-tone cotton shirt for $690 is modern and chic at the same time. The neutral tones will go with anything from solids to prints, making it easy to style. However, H&M got in on the two tone oversized poplin shirt bandwagon, too. So you can pick up this white and pink stripe shirt for only $25.

The Tapered-Waist Modified Menswear Shirt

If the oversized shirt look is too overpowering for you, this Tory Burch cotton-poplin peplum shirt may be more to your liking. It will accentuate your waistline beautifully, but still give you the ease of an oversized shirt. This shirt is a fabulous investment for $620 since you can wear it this spring and for years to come. But H&M did it again and offers this similar tapered-waist poplin shirt for only $25.

The Striped Oversized Modified Menswear Shirt

And last but not least, you can add stripes to your oversized white shirt. Bottega Veneta’s oversized striped cotton-poplin shirt is so cool with it’s bold stripes and perfectly pointed collar. It is definitely a standout shirt, which is why they can charge $950. But there are a lot of less expensive stripe shirts available, like this H&M cotton one for only $26.

How to Style an Oversized Modifed Menswear Shirt

So how do you wear one of these shirts? As I said, this trend is easy to wear. Here are some styling tips.

1. Wear oversized or statement shirts over basic bottoms. It works best with slimmer fitting pants or jeans, however you can also wear a big shirt over straight or wide leg trousers with crisp pleats or a more fitted flat front. Pencil skirts and even full pleated skirts work when the shirt is tucked in (see the spring 2023 runway look at Christian Dior pictured at the beginning of this post for an example).

2. Tuck it in. If you want to define your waist, you can tuck it. I was impressed with the way H&M styled their shirts. They left the shirt unbuttoned and criss-crossed it in the front before tucking it in which takes out the shirt’s volume around the hips, and leaves a flatter front. Then they tucked it into high waisted denim jeans for a flattering look. You may also opt for a waist-defining shirt like the Tory Burch peplum style I showed you.

3. Wear it out. You know you can wear it tunic style, but also consider wearing your oversized merswear shirt out over your pants and under a blazer. (See the example on the right.)

4. Layer it on. Try wearing an oversized shirt unbuttoned over a tight fitting T-shirt, tank or turtleneck. And layer cardigan sweaters, v-neck sweaters, vests, blazers, trench coats or cropped leather jackets for more variations. The styling options are endless, so this trend is worth the investment.
