9 Essential Summer Fashion Pieces Every Woman Over 50 Should Own

Here are 9 essential summer fashion pieces I think every woman should own, and they are especially ideal for women over 50. You may already have all of these pieces in your closet, and that’s fantastic because now you’re ready for summer 2023. However if you are missing one of these items on my must-have list, I’ll tell you why you may want to own it!

9 Summer Essentials: Fashion for Women Over 50

1. Tank Top

A basic scoop neck tank top is the perfect layering piece and comes in handy for really warm and humid summer days. I prefer one in black because it is not see-through. I also prefer one with thicker straps that won’t slide around and will hide your bra straps. Wear it under a jacket, cardigan or shirt, or on its own with a pair of jeans or pants or a long print skirt to look and feel cool this summer.

2. Button Front Shirt

A basic white, chambray or a classic menswear stripe button front shirt with long sleeves may be on trend for Spring/Summer 2023, but it will never go out of style. Whether it is oversized or fitted, a button front shirt is extremely versatile. Wear it on it’s own tucked in to your jeans with a belt or with any of your summer pants or skirts. You can also wear it over a tank top or dress like a jacket, or over your swimsuit as a beach cover-up.

3. Lightweight Denim Jeans

Every woman over 50 needs a comfortable pair of jeans to wear in summer. A lightweight and light wash denim pair in a loose or wide leg style will keep you cool. Wear your summer denim jeans with a t-shirt or blouse or your tank or button-front shirt!

4. White Pants

When the temperatures rise, nothing looks crisp or cooler than a pair of crisp white pants in cotton, denim or linen. You can even wear your darker colored or black tops and tees in summer when you pair them with white pants. If you are not a pants person, a white skirt will work in the same way.

5. Summer Essentials Dress

It can be any style, but a lightweight summer dress is a definite must-have for summer. I recommend a looser fitting, colorful print dress with sleeves in a midi or maxi length. Your summer dress can go casual with flat sandals or sneakers or wear it as a beach coverup. If you have a special event such as a shower or even a summer wedding to attend, you can dress it up with heels and jewelry.

6. Summer Jacket

A lightweight blazer or oversized jacket (which is on trend for 2023) works quite well over your summer tanks, pants and dresses. Or you may opt for a more casual jacket like a denim jacket or a bomber style. Even in summer, you may get hit with cool evenings and blasts of air-conditioning everywhere you go. You’ll always be prepared with a summer jacket.

7. Slide Sandals

Summer is time to free your feet and toes with a pair of slide sandals. A must-have is a flat sporty pair that is easy to walk around in and wear with everyday casual outfits. You can get basic black or find “dressed up” slides  with embellishments like buckles or sparkles. You may also like to get a pair of heeled or wedge sandals to wear with dressier looks.

8. Closed Toe Shoes

Ballet flats are a fresh option for Spring/Summer 2023, or of course, you can always go with a pair of classic sneakers! Wear either style with everything in your summer wardrobe. The ballet flats will dress up your jeans and skirts and the sneakers will give the same items a more casual look. But either way, you need a pair of closed toe, comfortable shoes for summer.

9. Lightweight Tote Bag

And last but not least, a lightweight tote bag made of cloth, raffia or straw is another essential fashion item you will need for summer. You can carry your wallet or jacket in the bag, or use it for the beach or pool. The best thing is that it is light and airy and easy to carry.
