One good thing about growing older (or growing younger as we like to say) is what’s old often becomes new again. Case in point is the 90s inspired oversized leather blazer. Guess what? It’s back on trend!
90s Inspired Oversized Leather Blazers
Oversized leather blazers for women have been shown by top designers like Tom Ford, Saint Laurent, Givenchy and many more. The trend recently hit the runways for Spring 2023 at Marni, Peter Doo and Bottega Veneta, as shown below.

Take a look inside your closet, because you may already have one of these jackets hanging there. Or if you want to shop for a new one, there are plenty of options and you don’t have to spend a fortune on this trend. I’ve got you covered.
A Versatile Transitional Jacket
I pulled one out of my closet that I’ve had since the 90s and I still wear it a lot. I love the versatility of a long oversized leather blazer. It also makes an ideal transition piece to wear from winter to spring. If you get one now, you will no doubt continue to wear it this fall as it will still be on trend.
So here are my reasons why I think you need an oversized leather (or faux leather) blazer, tips on how to wear them for women over 50, as well as a wide selection to shop in a variety of colors and at all price points.
Why You Need an Oversized Leather Blazer
- As I mentioned before, an oversized leather blazer is super-versatile. You can throw it on over a t-shirt and jeans for a casual look, over a sweater or button up shirt with dress pants for work, or over a silk blouse and sequin pants for an evening look.
- The shape is flattering. The longer length keeps you covered, so you may feel more confident wearing it over tight jeans or pants or skirts that are a little more clingy. No need to worry about panty lines or how your butt looks since it is covered up under this jacket style.
- It doesn’t wrinkle! A leather or faux leather jacket will keep it’s shape.
- Super comfortable. The oversized shape is not restrictive and is easy to move in.
- A chic way to stay warm. It gets cold out there, and you need a jacket, even in spring. So instead of wearing a denim jacket, why not sport a more refined look? An oversized leather blazer will dress you up in an instant.
How To Style An Oversized Leather Blazer When You’re Over 50
This is the fun part, because it’s easy to style. One of my favorite ways to wear a 90s inspired oversized blazer for spring is (like the example above) over a t-shirt and denim jeans with boots, sandals or sneakers.
Or go all black and elegant like this Tom Ford look on Net-a-Porter. Wear a black leather blazer with a black silk shirt, black pants or jeans, sleek gold high heel sandals and a small handbag with gold embellishments.
Or take it down a notch and go with all black and a white tee. This look from Topshop is very 90s complete with high waist jeans and square toe boots.
You can also style an oversized leather jacket over a skirt, as shown with these jackets from Reformation, Vince and Givenchy (above from left to right). See how it works over many different shapes from slinky to body con to full skirts? It’s best to go with a midi length skirt or dress if you are over 50.
Try cropped denim jeans and different colored accessories, like this look from & Other Stories. I adore the bright punch of color Kelly green handbag and the unusual wedge boots. The no-belt look makes it casual cool and comfortable.
Go bold with matching pants and make a suit out of an oversized faux leather blazer like this look from Staud. (I’d recommend wearing a scoop neck top or cami under it!) If this is too much color for you, it also comes in whisky brown for a more toned-down version.
Shop Oversized Leather and Faux Leather Blazers
Now that you know why you need one of these oversized leather jackets and how to wear one, its time to shop! I included everything here from the $5,250 Tom Ford jacket to under $100 faux leather ones, as well as a variety of colors. You just may want to own more than one!
What is your favorite way to wear a leather jacket. Do you like the oversized look or do you prefer one that is more fitted?
