Best Ways to Style Neutral Colors: Creams, Tans and Taupes

Some of the things I think people love about the holidays are the glitz, glamor and full color on display in the festive clothing and décor of the season. There is a richness that comes that time of year that fully envelopes people and just brings joy. However, now that we are past another festive season, let’s take a step back from all the color and get back to some simple and clean neutrals. Let’s look at apparel and accessory options in creams, tans and taupes. These neutral colors are great to wear now and later, and they are perfect for women over 40.

Neutral Colors: Creams, Tans and Taupes

Neutral Tops

Neutrals like creams, tans and taupes are beautiful on almost everyone. Lately, it’s been a go-to color option for me. I’m trying to get away from so much black and gray, but still want something that’s not so flashy. I’ve been seeing this cable knit short sleeve sweater during my recent trips to Express, and I may not be able to resist buying it for much longer. I would wear it with a long sleeve white button-down shirt underneath with some dark wash jeans and loafers.

I also really like this Free People off the shoulder ribbed top that can work now and also be worn throughout the spring and even into the fall. If you aren’t afraid to show a sliver of skin, this is a nice top that can go with anything you already have in your closet. If you are into buying multiples, it also comes in black, which is a no-brainer purchase as a closet staple.

Pants And Dresses In Neutral Colors

One the first items that I found when researching for this post was this off-the-shoulder sweater dress from Banana Republic. I immediately fell in love with it. It’s super sexy and the neutral tan color is timeless and chic. So, I will admit, I haven’t been wearing many dresses as of late, but this is the one that I see myself wearing when the occasion presents itself. You can do super sexy and pair this with some snakeskin pattern, chocolate brown stiletto heels, go casual with a pair of sneakers, lug boots or combat boots, or do something in-between with over-the-knee boots.

If you want to try neutral on just the bottom, you can get these high-waisted wide-leg pants from Urban Outfitters. Even though they are a basic style, they are also a simple and classic silhouette. I would wear these with a graphic tee and oversized cardigan when going out for errands or even to work.

Neutral Outerwear

I know we have looked at spring fashions and trends already, but we aren’t out of the winter woods yet! It’s not too late to indulge in some new outerwear and getting a neutral-toned piece is probably a great idea. This oversized padded jacket in tan is an exceptional piece to buy now at an incredibly affordable price. The neutral color and classic shape also makes it a great buy because you can wear it season after season.

Also, I don’t think I should have to mention the option of a classic camel coat. If you don’t have one already, get your hands on one. You can find a camel coat no matter your budget. These coats have been around for decades (if not centuries) and it’s an option that is always in style and always looks chic.

Shoes And Accessories

One of my favorite parts of putting together a look is picking the shoes and accessories! Working with neutral creams, tans and taupes are no exceptions. If I’m not doing black, I prefer to wear a neutral color like this because I know it will always be in style. I’ve been on a neutral color shoe kick lately and have been buying a lot of new cream-colored boots. I just bought these tan suede Galway boots from Steve Madden. It’s not easy to find a suede boot for such a great price, but here you are. The color and fabrication are rich, and the substantial feel of this boot is well worth the $80 price tag.

If sneakers are more your speed, I found these Madewell Kickoff Trainer Sneakers in a leather color-block tan that are perfect for a casual look. I’m still primarily rocking sweatpants on a regular basis but adding an upscale pair of leather sneakers like these can help elevate my look.

Finally, if you feel like you are ready to replace your black bag with something new and fresh, or just want to add to your collection, this Vince Camuto Jude leather tote bag is a worthwhile addition. Something about a cream colored bag adds a fresh feel to your look. It can span all seasons, so you don’t have to worry about retiring it for the wintertime. Just make sure to treat the leather to avoid stains!

Expert Style Tips for Neutral Colors

  1. Head-to-toe neutrals are a classic look. Don’t be afraid to go monochromatic with your creams, taupes and tans. It’s a powerful and chic look that will never go out of style.
  2. Complete the look with metallics. Metallics look beautiful with these neutral tones. I’m partial to gold, but silver could pair beautifully with these shades as well. Make an impact with metallic finishes.
  3. Warm tones work too. If you are not into the monochromatic look, warm tones pair very well with these neutral shades. Just think of pairing an oxblood colored skirt or sienna colored pair of boots with a rich tan sweater or dress. It will look gorgeous!
