Last night was fashion’s most anticipated event and it didn’t disappoint. Another Met Gala is in the books and it has left behind a blooming botanical trail of unforgettable moments and breathtaking couture. I took a look at the Met Gala 2024 fashion on the red carpet to see best dressed celebrities.
The Met Gala 2024 Fashion Theme
The theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” examines “how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again,” according to Vogue. Guests like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian, and Demi Moore, arrived in an assortment of outfits inspired by “The Garden of Time” theme. With nods to J.G. Ballard’s story, attendees blended old-world charm with futuristic flair on the red carpet. Themes of floral, water, land and even darkness made themselves known in the biggest fashion extravaganza to date.
Every dress has a story, but I can’t possibly write about them all, nor do I love every gown. But so many of them did take my breath away.

Met Gala 2024 Fashion: The Floral, The Dark and The Ugly
Too much garden, not enough goth? Or the other way around? We had both at this year’s Met Gala and some of the fashionistas couldn’t decide which direction they wanted to go. From Emma Chamberlain’s “decaying” gown to Kelsea Ballerini’s floral wonderland, here are the most standout looks from the 2024 Met Gala.
Best Dressed: They Got The Memo
These were some of the most unforgettable looks of the night from stars who obviously understood the assignment.
Demi Moore’s stunning look not only had floral on it but it was custom made from a 60-year-old panel of silk wallpaper.
She’s looks like a deer in a mystical forest, but Lana del Ray’s stunning Alexander McQueen piece actually references an archival look from the late designer’s fall 2006 collection. The dress is corseted in silk, double georgette and tulle hand-embroidered with hammered bronze-bullion hawthorn branches, inspired by the sculptures of Swiss artist Alberto Giacommetti.
People magazine calls it Carrie Bradshaw, but designer Richard Quinn calls it birdcage. This stunning crystal-emblazoned dress with stunning Philip Treacy headpiece helps SJP mark her first return to the Met Gala since 2022.
Mindy Kaling didn’t even wear color but it’s still the best she’s ever looked. While it doesn’t seem very “nature-like,” Kaling noted that the dress was called “The Melting Flower of Time.”
I don’t usually feature designers on the red carpet, but this is a stunning look.
I don’t remember ever seeing one star in two different fashion looks on the red carpet, but hey, Zendaya does what she wants when it comes to fashion and she doesn’t disappoint. She’s also a co-chair at the Met Gala this year.
Gigi Hadid may be young, but it’s certainly the best she’s ever looked.
It’s not as extravagant as the gown on Lana del Ray, but there’s something about this sculpted dress on Brie Larson that I find completely stunning. And in a departure from the more “garden” looks, Larson’s Prada dress marks the passage of time. “Sand falling through an hourglass, the changing colors of a golden hour sunset, and the dress itself is made through the dedication of the atelier—giving their time to this craft,” Larson said.
A little too much highlighter on JLo, but she stuns in a nearly see-through gown with stone embellishments.
Loewe certainly outdid itself for this year’s Met Gala, dressing the likes of Anna Wintour, Ayo Edebiri and Taylor Russell, Vogue’s red carpet risktaker.
Met Gala 2024 Floral Fashion and Nature Themes
A different way to showcase the floral theme.
Wet Looks
Here are some wet looks, that remind me of water in the best way possible.
Gabrielle Union in her mermaid moment.
At first I was going to put this dress on the worst dressed list. But look at it. It’s so beautifully sculpted and it looks exactly like she’s covered in sand. I don’t know if this Balmain gown could have worked on an awards ceremony red carpet, but it’s perfect for the theme of this Met Gala and I’m pretty enthralled.
Sky Blues
And then there was the beautiful sky blue.
The Dark Side: Black at The Met Gala 2024
When I think garden, I think color. I don’t think black. Therefore, I wasn’t a fan of the black looks at this year’s event, which unfortunately represented death, decay, and darkness for me. I can’t ignore some of these stunning looks, though. So I’m going to post them below.
The Worst Dressed at The Met Gala 2024
This look could have been something. Instead, it looks comic and not in a good way.
I think Doja tried to be experimental with her wet t-shirt look but it certainly didn’t do her any favors. I expected more.
Not sure what’s going on here with this blow-up bottom. I don’t like it.
Big ugh to Lizzo and her “vase dress.”
