Earlier this month, Fountain Of 30 co-founder Carol Calacci referred to sporty chic or “sporty cool” as one of the best Spring 2024 fashion trends for women over 50. This pulled-together look with a sporty edge, which she described as the “movement and comfort” of sportswear mixed with otherwise serious or work-appropriate pieces was shown on the runways of Gucci, Givenchy, Dries Van Noten and more.
Sporty Chic Celebrities Over 50
Celebrities have long championed the sporty cool trend, and even more so in the era of athleisure, where the boundary between activewear and everyday attire blurs. For these women, dressing sporty chic means prioritizing both physical fitness, fashion-forwardness and comfort. It has become a natural part of the celebrity lifestyle, which as Carol cleverly points out, transcends age barriers.
Whether they’re wearing tech statement sneakers with a businesslike trench coat or throwing on a sharp blazer over leggings and a tee, celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Cindy Crawford, Gabrielle Union, Rihanna and Cate Blanchett are showing us how to rock the sporty chic look for spring.

Jennifer Lopez
Not only does superstar Jennifer Lopez defy age with good genes and a timeless appearance, but she also stands out as one of the prime examples of a fashion icon flawlessly embodying the “sporty chic” trend. From matching sweat sets to the stylish coat draped over sculpted leggings and white sneakers (above), Lopez consistently exudes sophistication while embracing comfort. Her ability to blend fashion-forward elements with a sporty edge effortlessly should remain a constant source of inspiration for fashionistas of all ages, solidifying her status as a trailblazer in fashion as well as in acting and performing.
Cindy Crawford
Even at age 58, Cindy Crawford remains the epitome of All-American beauty. But she’s also the queen of sporty chic, often seen in an elegant black blazer thrown over jeans and a white tee. Who knew a white t-shirt could be so versatile? Apparently luxury brand Veronica Beard, which has come up with the Cindy V-Neck Tee made from soft cotton to easily tuck into jeans. It also comes in black, if you decide you want to top it with a white blazer or one in a bold color.
Gabrielle Union
Speaking of white blazers, Gabrielle Union wears hers over what looks like a black sports bra. I don’t think just anyone can pull off this look, but they’re certainly going to try after seeing how much she rocks it here.
Rihanna
I know what you’re all thinking. Yes, Rihanna is only 36. Still, I had to add her to this list because she’s amazing at mixing timeless elegance with sporty chic. Earlier this year, she sat in the front row at the Dior Spring 2024 show, where she turned a chic black pencil skirt set into a sporty moment by adding a black cap. Suddenly, the top piece of this ensemble looks like a dressy windbreaker, doesn’t it?
Back in March 2021, she wore a slip dress under a bomber jacket. In 2022, she “served sporty glamour” rocking a blue, black, and white track jacket from Martine Rose over a sweat skirt with fluffy green lining and lace up pumps. And we’ve seen the singer wearing tracksuit bottoms and heels on more than one occasion. Rihanna may be a risktaker when it comes to fashion, but I can see fashionistas of all ages pulling inspiration from her outfits.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett’s style needs no introduction. The actress takes risks with her fashion and often goes with edgy androgynous looks that doesn’t cater to either sex. Think power suits, bold shoulders, and tie neck blouses. But then, she’ll often throw in what I call a “sporty element.” Think cargo pants, a graphic t-shirt under a blazer, or dungarees with dressy shoes. In the look above, the fashionista pairs an ombre AZ Factory Pre-Fall 2024 denim suit with a statement Louis Vuitton necklace. The look to me feels sporty streetwear. What do you think?
