How To Save Face When You’re Having A Hot Flash

This is a sponsored post. You know the drill. You’re sitting there looking and feeling pretty good, minding your own business when all of a sudden you feel it start. That intense heat that begins in your chest and rises to your neck and head. Meanwhile beads of sweat start running down your face taking your makeup with them. That’s right, you’re having a hot flash due to menopause and those two to five minutes it takes to pass feels like an eternity. You hope nobody will notice, but you are simultaneously stripping off your jacket while dabbing your face with a tissue that now has makeup all over it. Hot flashes are the worst and never come at the right time.

What To Do When You’re Having A Hot Flash

Night sweats are bad enough but at least you are in the comfort of your own home.. and makeup free. Hot flashes during the day can cause embarrassment, especially when your carefully applied makeup slides off leaving you feeling even more exposed. 3 out of 4 menopausal women experience hot flashes and/or night sweats and yet we rarely talk about them. Well we are going to talk about them now.

The truth is, when you have a hot flash your body temperature has actually dropped a degree but your brain doesn’t get the message and your body becomes hot to the touch. Then when we start to have that internal freak-out (“is this really happening NOW?”) it just makes matters worse (I can feel my ears turn red). My secret is to try to regulate my breathing (by taking slow deep breathes) which seems to help with the duration of the hot flash. Another is to carefully select what makeup I am applying to my face. You are going to have to change up a few of your products if you want to look fresh as a daisy all day long. We are going to talk about the best makeup for hot flashes with tips from a pro.

Best Makeup For Hot Flashes: Tips From A Pro

I spoke with Professional Makeup Artist/Beauty Educator Charina Redugerio (@Cheenabobeena) for some expert advice. Here are some of her tips and tricks for keeping your makeup on your face… where it belongs.

1. Make sure SPF is the first step in your makeup routine.

You should have been doing this since before the hot flashes started but it’s even more essential to do so now. “As we age our skin has a greater chance of developing age and sun spots. Even the blue light from our computer screens is now becoming a huge reason for wearing it too,” advises Charina.

2. Follow up with a sweat proof moisturizer daily before applying your foundation.

“It will help keep your makeup in place after a hot flash,” advises Charina. “Try to keep in mind your moisturizer is the main foundation that all your makeup will sit on, so if it’s able to withstand a hot flash, then the rest of your makeup will have the same chance.”

3. Wear waterproof and/or sweat-proof foundation.

Both hot flashes and perspiration, can prove deadly for foundation’s staying power. According to Charina, “Find a foundation that has Polymers (like Acrylates and Isododecan) which can be found in moisturizers and foundations. These two Polymers are film forming molecules that give beauty products long-wear ability.” Read your labels! Waterproof makeup is going to be your best friend now.

4. Always remember that less is more when it comes to applying your complexion products.

Too much makeup is just not a good look as we get older and if it comes off mid-day, you are going to look worse for wear. Try to go with a more natural look.

5. Choose water proof mascara and eyeliner.

This one may seem obvious but it bares repeating. These two products are no longer just for summer when you get hot flashes. Many waterproof mascaras clump so look for one that doesn’t. You may have to test a few, but it’s worth it to find one that looks most natural. Also, be sure the eyeliner looks natural too. Water proof products can be a bit heavy, but they have come a long way in recent years.

6. Use cream eye shadow and blush.

“Cream products have more staying power and are easier to retouch throughout the day (as needed). The warmth of your fingers will help blend the products back into place, ” advises Charina.

7. Long wear lipstick should be your friend.

Long wear lipstick can be very drying so use a little gloss over your favorite shade.

8. Invest in a good makeup remover that specifically removes water proof products.

As much as you don’t want your makeup coming off during the day, you are going to want to make sure you remove every last bit before you go to bed. Sleeping with traces of makeup left on your face is extremely unhealthy for your skin.

9. Use setting spray.

Charina’s last tip is “Finish off your makeup application by setting your face with a cooling longwear setting spray. Look for setting sprays with Aloe Vera or Mint. Then keep them in the fridge for an extra cooling effect.”
