The Spring/Summer ’16 fashion trends are popping up all over the internet, in magazines and in the stores, but what trends can you really wear when you’re over 40? The options can be overwhelming and you’ve learned from experience to not go overboard, but you don’t want to be boring. It’s almost summer after all! So which new summer trends do you need? We get you want to give your wardrobe an update but don’t want to look like you’re trying too hard either. Well you’ve come to the right place. We weeded through all the latest trends of the season and found pieces we deem appropriate for women over 40, which by no means are boring! If we won’t wear it (and we are admittedly a bit daring sometimes) we will not recommend it. What we do suggest are useful, fun, classic, chic and comfortable fashion pieces to brighten up your summer of 2016. Additionally we bet you can wear some of these items into fall and for seasons to come.
Topshop Moto ‘Elton’ Oversize Denim Shirt, $65
Denim and chambray of every hue are everywhere this season, so the addition of a jean shirt will go a long way. Find a blue shade that’s right for you and wear it with your favorite black or white jeans. Or be bold and wear denim with another shade of denim. The versatile jean shirt can be worn tied at the waist over a dress or open as a jacket.
Gucci Swing Mini Crossbody Bag, Black, $940
Almost all the luxury designers are doing it and for good reason: they designed mini versions of their covetable handbags that are more affordable and very on-trend. You can also find look alikes for even less. My favorites are mini satchels with an optional crossbody strap. These bags are practical because they are lightweight for summer, have room for all your essentials (cell phone, shades, lipstick, wallet) and leave your hands free. Besides, mini versions of everything are always so adorable.
CROPPED FLARE JEANS
You will see many different versions of the cropped flare jean, from wide leg and high-waisted to slim kick flares (like the pair above) and some have faded, unfolded or frayed hems. Try on several styles to see what works for you, but the common denominator is this silhouette looks fresh and easy going and your footwear will get a lot of attention. So now you have an excuse for new shoes!
When I met shoe designer Edgardo Osorio of Aquazurra last month (so exciting) he said one must-have shoe of the season is the “Date Flat.” Instead of a pump, you can feel just as sexy in a lace-up or decorative flat. Aquazurra offers plenty of gorgeous flats but you can find them at all price points. These shoes can be worn with everything from jeans to dresses and shorts to trousers.
BOLD COLORFUL PRINTS
If you want to spice up your summer look add some bold color to your wardrobe. Look for hot colored patterns, bright florals on dark backgrounds, multicolored stripes and mixed prints. Actually, you won’t miss them!
ASOS Luxe Bomber Jacket In Satin, $88.96
Military looks are back (yes, again!) and the bomber is the perfect topper to wear over skinny jeans and a t-shirt. This jacket can dress down a sleek LBD or add some edge to a full midi skirt. The silk bomber is the equivalent of the leather moto jacket, only lighter for summer! It’s the bomb. (Sorry I had to…)
FULL MIDI SKIRT
Here is an example of the full skirt which can get “toughened up” when you wear it with a bomber jacket like the one above. You may have kept one in your closet from last year so pull it out again. Full midi skirts are perfect for those of us (I’m in this gang) who say “I will never wear shorts again.” There are a wide variety of full midi skirts with uneven hems, tiers, embellishments and ruffles in solids and prints. You will wear a skirt like this again and again.
Lauren and I want to stress finding “adult” ruffles when you shop for this trend. Adult ruffles are sleek, sometimes asymmetrical, (never off the shoulder or resembling a clown!) and always beautiful. Think minimalist, not overboard.
The perfect pencil skirt is back on trend again. Wear a lightweight pencil skirt from the office to the ball park and wear one with a touch of stretch instead of shorts for Summer ’16.
BLOCK HEEL SHOES
It’s always hard to narrow down the must-have footwear trends (there are so many!) but the block heeled shoe or sandal is one we are excited about. You can actually walk in these and not have to worry about your heels breaking off in a grate! You still get an extra lift to make you legs look curvier, and you also gain 2-3″ in height! The new block heel styles are great-looking too. Rejoice! Comfort is here for the summer!
