One of the things I love most about summer attire is the casualness of it all. I can get away with palazzo pants, t-shirts and maxi dresses with sandals throughout the course of the entire season. The trick to showing your true style during this season is how you accessorize your summer basics. Don’t get me wrong, fashion accessories can make or break an outfit any time of the year. However many times, fall and winter styles have that extra flair in which a special piece of apparel can be the epicenter of your entire outfit and you can get away with minimal accessories. For summer, I like to do the opposite by piling on the accessories and keeping my actual apparel light and simple. Here are some of the best affordable summer accessories that are on-trend this year.
I think the key to affordable summer accessories is to find some options that are big, bold and fun. You don’t want to feel guilty about switching or swapping them out with friends during the next summer season or just buying new ones for the next year. Especially now, when many people are trying to get back on their feet while we trudge through waiting for the economy bouncing back. It doesn’t seem like fine jewelry is the right option for everyone right now. Some good ways to go about finding new pieces is to check out the runways, the designer sections of some of your favorite high-end retailers or some of your favorite celebrities. Then find a nice dupe or similar product that can give you the same feel without the high price. So, are you ready to do some shopping for affordable summer accessories?

I adore big, oversized jewelry for the summer and live in statement necklaces and earrings. This Octagonal Link Necklace from Oscar de la Renta, though currently marked down, is still super pricey at north of $400. Finding a more affordable option, but still getting the same effect is not difficult. I found this BCBGeneration Two Tone Link Necklace that is also a nice statement piece for a fraction of the price. Just think of paring this with your favorite maxi dress and leather sandals for a simple, yet put together summer look. If you are looking for a great, oversized summer tote bag, I’m loving the ones that are featuring the tie-dye trend that has been so popular this season. This Large Tie Dye Tote Bag by MICHAEL Michael Kors is bright and airy and perfect for a day at the beach or a picnic. It won’t completely break the bank with a price tag of $228, however, this may still be pricey for some. A more affordable alternative is this Steven by Steve Madden Darla Large Tote. You get the same beautiful, bright blue tie-dye and the larger size, but for only $54.
I must admit, I’m not a huge fan of the square toe shoe trend. However, I can’t deny that this trend is here for summer 2020 and will probably continue well into the fall. If you are like me and don’t love this trend but are still curious to try it (who knows, maybe I’ll convert?), you won’t want to spend a small fortune on a pair of square toe shoes. Don’t get me wrong, there are some beautifully crafted options, like these Bottega Veneta Leather Mules but paying the asking price of $860 is completely out of the question. Instead, I’d rather opt for a less expensive version that I can experiment with. I really like Betsey Johnson brand shoes, they are fun, unique and affordable. So something like these Anya Croc Embossed Toe Loop Sandals from her Blue collection are a nice option if you want to try this trend. If you don’t end up liking them in the end, you aren’t really out that much cash, but at least you can say you tried. And who knows, I’m sure you have a girlfriend that will appreciate you gifting her a barely worn pair of super-trendy square toe sandals!
Expert Summer Accessories Styling Tips
- Mix up the metals. Do you remember when mixing metals in jewelry was so taboo? Not to mention anything else in metallic accessories. Well, what a relief that is no longer the case. Mixing and matching metals and metallic colors is the new norm so don’t be afraid to combine your gold, silver and copper tones. These Square Cat Eye Sunglasses in rose gold from the Jessica Simpson Collection are super fun for the summer. I love how trendy and affordable they are so you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank for some summer fashion fun. Pair them with these silver Naturalizer Sansa Leather Wedge Sandals (now only $39.95) with a crisp white t-shirt dress and a colorful bag for the perfect summer outfit.
- Play with all of the colors of the rainbow. The rainbow trend is sweeping fashion jewelry this summer. It’s ideal because you don’t have to commit to one color and it provides a pop of color to any apparel option you choose to wear. A pair of full color statement earrings like these Eye Spy Drop Earrings from Baublebar would top off a neutral outfit perfectly. Or you can add a bracelet stack with some sparkle like this Lynx Crystal Bracelet Set, also from Baublebar. I welcome the subtle pastel colors of the baguette crystals in the stack. The rainbow trend doesn’t have to be just for jewelry, this Vince Camuto Silk Bandana Scarf reminds me of a summer sunset and can be worn with so many different colors to top off a bright and beautiful summer look.
- Beads are back. I will admit, I don’t know when beaded jewelry came back in style, but I’m digging it. In all honestly, you may be safe pulling out of your oldies but goodies if you still have some pieces from the last time beads were on trend. However, if you want to start fresh, I really like going with some earth tone options to keep it sophisticated and mature. These Semi Precious Stone Wrap Bracelets from UncommonGoods are excellent start to get your stack going, or they are good to wear on their own, with your watch or some metal-toned bangles.
