3 Great-Fitting Swimsuits With Coverups for Women Over 50

It may seem early for swimwear, but if now is a good time to get the best fitting swimsuit. You may have plans for a warm weather vacation in the near future and before you know it, it will be summertime! I put together 3 swimsuits with coverups outfits that are ideal for women over 50, but women of all ages may want to wear them too.

Swimsuits With Coverups for Women Over 50

I was going to do one of my high-end vs low-price outfit posts, but most of the designer swimwear was really not suitable for women over 50. Very few of the suits had underwires, padding or molded cups, which I know is a deal-breaker for most women our age. This kind of construction in swimwear is necessary if you are large busted and need support, or small chested and want to add more shaping.

Besides having no support whatsoever, the suits feature a lot of plunging Vs, cutouts and tiny straps that are simply uncomfortable, not to mention unflattering. And on top of that, designer swimwear is expensive! Most suits cost around $400 or $500.

So I decided to shop for myself, keeping other women over 50 in mind. If you are like me, I no longer live in a swimsuit all summer like I used to when I was younger. In fact, I have worn the same suit for the last 5 years, because I only put it on 2 or 3 times each year! It’s clearly time for me to get a new one.

Be Prepared For A Swimsuit Fashion Emergency

Even if you hardly ever wear a swimsuit, it is best to be prepared. A swimsuit outfit is not one you can easily put together in a rush. That’s why I recommend doing it now, so you will have it for a beach or pool emergency.

Early spring is a good time to shop because the inventory is high. That’s especially important when it comes to swim separates. It makes me crazy when I find the right size and style top, for example, but there are no matching bottoms left, or vice-versa.

Here are 3 options to inspire you to put together your own swimsuit and coverup outfit.

Two-Piece Swimsuit Outfit for Women Over 50

Here is a modest and supportive bikini if you still like to wear one. I wore a style like this well into my 50s. La Blanca knows what women need, and offers a wonderful variety of tops and bottoms in bright solid colors and prints to choose from.

I like this wrap bikini top because it offers both shaping and support with molded soft cups. It has thinner straps, so your accidental tan line (you’re wearing sunscreen, right?) won’t interfere with the rest of your summer wardrobe.

The crossover high waist bottoms are comfortable and keep your tummy and rear covered. I can vouch that this style is very flattering for women over 50. It is much more sophisticated than the string bikinis younger women can wear.

A bold solid colored suit looks sharp with black and white accessories. This light and breezy cover up from Elan is easy to slip on and off. It’s short, but much more covered than just a beach shirt so you can get away with stopping at the store (for sunscreen) on the way to the beach or pool.

Finish this look with Dr. Scholl’s black platform slides (that you will wear all summer) and a mini-tote in black straw with white trim from Target.

Tankini Swimsuit Outfit for Women Over 50

If you can’t fathom the idea of baring your midriff, a tankini is an excellent option. It gives you the look of a one-piece along with the comfort and freedom to move (and use the ladies room). It also allows you to choose the right size top and bottoms to give you a customized fit.

You can go with a solid, but a bold print tankini is super fun. Believe it or not it can make you look slimmer because the viewers eye does not know where to fall. The angular slanted stripe pattern in this particular suit is extremely flattering.

For a print swimsuit it’s best (but not imperative) to go with a solid beach coverup. The color does not even need to exist in your suit (it’s covering it up right?) but a matching  or coordinating color, like the gorgeous green of this Echo gauze midi dress, works well. Tip: a bright or darker color shows less see-though when it comes to the gauzy fabrics of beach coverups than white or pastels.

For this look I prefer classic neutral straw accessories, like this larger beach tote with black straps from Amazon and these Steve Madden flat slide sandals.

Classic One-Piece Swimsuit Outfit for Women Over 50

Last but no least, you can’t go wrong with a classic black one-piece suit. Miraclesuit® makes suits that lift, support and take off pounds just like body shapers. If you want to be more comfortable, I’d go up a size, as they recommend for a looser fit.

This Sanibel One-Piece is my favorite because it has very simple styling with a bit of a retro feel. This suit can live in your closet for many years!

The beauty of a black one-piece swimsuit is you can wear just about any coverup because it’s like you are wearing a tank top. Try a skirt or even palazzo pants. This over-the-knee blue print sarong is from Miraclesuit is ideal for walks on the beach or around the pool.

Grab a bright colored beach tote like this lavender Straw one from Amazon and slip on some thong sandals like this pair from Vince. You will look chic and also feel comfortable in this swim suit outfit. Now you can get excited to go to that pool party!
