SAG Awards 2023 Fashion: Bold Color, The Best and Worst Dressed Celebrities

Hollywood’s brightest stars shone on the red carpet at the SAG Awards 2023, proving once again that awards season is the ultimate showcase of personal style. The Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles was buzzing with excitement as actors and actresses from the world of film and television arrived in their best looks to pay homage to the guild and to each other. I took a look at SAG Awards 2023 fashion on the red carpet and bold color was a huge trend. I also saw some of the best, the questionable and the worst dressed celebrities.

Dressing for the SAG Awards is no easy feat, as Hollywood stylists must navigate the sheer number of A-list attendees vying for the perfect outfit. Usually, the result is a spectacular blend of fashion aesthetics and trends that always manages to impress.

Not so much this year. While some outfits stood out for their uniqueness and classic elegance – I’m talking about fashion favorites like Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain – a few of the ensembles looked off-putting and downright cartoonish. For instance, Zendaya has become a risk-taking fashion powerhouse. But how could anyone think her cough medicine pink floral-embellished mess of a dress was anything less than cartoonish?

SAG Awards 2023 Fashion on The Red Carpet

Here’s what stood out, for better or worse, at the 2023 SAG Awards.

The Best Fashion In Bold Color

Emily Blunt SAG Awards 2023 Oscar de la Renta
Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta

Like you, my first thought when I saw this gown was that it reminded me of a Herve Leger bandage dress. But this piece from Oscar de la Renta is so much more.

This is definitely my pick for best fashion look of the night. Red and yellow were bold trends that came back to the red carpet for the SAGs, but this dress is more then just a trend of the moment. The texture is divine, including the circling fabric and circling flowers. This paneling adorned in floral applique is sleek against Emily’s enviable figure.  Don’t you just love when a dress fits the actor’s silhouette exactly right?

Jessica Chastain in Zuhair Murad

Jessica Chastain is always such as showstopper in every look she wears and she always surprises me on the red carpet. Not sure if I’ve ever personally seen her in fuchsia, but what a good color on her.

Amanda Seyfried in Prada

I know some of you (well most of you) are going to disagree with me on this one, but I can’t help but love the theme Amanda Seyfried has going on here, despite the green paper sack of a dress. I love the cape detail and how 60s the whole look is from her hair to the mod cut of the dress.

Red and Yellow

Olivia Williams

I’ve just been told this is actually orange…but we’ll leave it here.

Jamie Lee Curtis in Romona Keveza

I’m so impressed with Jamie Lee Curtis’s comeback on the red carpet in general, and especially with this look. I just love what it’s doing for her!

Angela Bassett in Giambattista Valli

Angela Bassett never fails to disappoint and thought I don’t love the messiness of the tulle in this look, I do love the color!

Viola Davis in Valentino
Niecy Nash Betts in Vera Wang
Claire Foy in Prada

Other SAG Awards 2023 Fashion Celebrity “Standouts”

I put standouts in quotation marks because I’m really not sure how I feel about these looks. What do you think?

Michelle Yeoh in Schiaparelli couture

Was she trying to make a statement or is it because it’s Schiaparelli?

Zendaya in Valentino

Quinta Brunson

Is she wearing a seashell? I half expect to see a serving of Coquilles Saint-Jacques on the other side.

Rooney Mara in Alexander McQueen

When I think Alexander McQueen, this is not the typical dress that comes to mind. I will say that it feels very Rooney Mara, though.

SAG Awards 2023 fashion Danielle Deadwyler in Louis Vuitton

Michelle Williams in Dior
Jennifer Coolidge in Saint Laurent

I’d love to start seeing her wear more color, but how could I not include Jennifer Coolidge on this list?

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive

It’s been reported that Cate Blanchett repurposed this Armani Prive gown from her own archives and is wearing a “third iteration of this black lace number that she also wore to the 2014 Golden Globes and the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. I love that this dress has a good story.

Jenna Ortega in Vintage Versace

I love when Jenna Ortega wears color because because black reminds me too much of Wednesday Addams. But alas, this dress has an interesting character.

  1. Zendaya & Jessica looked stunningly beautiful & classy to me.
The green sack could have been good in a Mia Farrow sort of cut – less fabric and no hands in the pockets!
Acid yellow not my favorite at all but pick tulle on top or bottom, not both.
Michelle Y needed a trim or maybe that shag carpet only from waist up?
