If you are like us and love a great coat or jacket, then fall might be the best season for fashion. You can bring out your old favorites as well as pick up some new pieces — and we can’t forget all the scarves, hats and other accessories to complete the overall look. Let’s take a look at the latest outerwear trends for fall/winter 2024.
Best Outerwear Trends For Fall/Winter 2024
Some of our favorite styles this fall include bomber jackets (often done in leather or faux leather), shearling and all the plaid you can handle. Plaid is perfect for both preppier looks or something a bit edgier, depending on how you style it.
Puffers aren’t going anywhere either, but new materials, hi-tech fabrics and creative shapes are making them seem fresh and even downright futuristic. You may opt for an abbreviated cropped look, or go for a full-length cocoon of coziness.

Without further adieu, here are some of our favorite coats and jackets for women Fall/Winter 2024.
Tailored Plaid
Whether you opt for a blazer style or a longer coat, it might be nice to add some pattern to your outerwear wardrobe. Old Navy has a great plaid blazer that lets you try the trend for less than $50, or go for something a little warmer with this NVLT eyelash knit plaid coat (from Anthropologie). If you usually wear solids, a neutral-hued plaid is a great way to add some visual interest. This coat can go from preppy with loafers to more punk with leather pants and boots.
Outerwear Trends: Overstuffed Puffers
You may also see these referred to as duvet coats, but long puffers that look as cozy as a comforter are useful and chic for those of us in colder climates. Check out the Duvet puffer from Aritzia for an option that comes in one of your favorite neutral shades and stay extra warm this winter.
Cropped Puffers
Practicality aside, a cropped puffer is a great way to play with volume without the heaviness of a full-length coat. We’re big fans of the asymmetrical shawl collar on this one by Avec Les Filles that adds structure and drama to a basic ensemble.
Luxe Bomber Jackets
Leather or faux-leather bomber jackets, often with a deliberately oversize fit, are one of the more popular styles for fall and a great everyday jacket option This slightly distressed deep brown version from Pilcro (available at Anthropologie) is a great option in one of fall’s most popular colors.
Rich Shearling Coats for Women
Shearling coats have a casual cool factor that pops up every few seasons. So if you like that look you’ll be spoiled for choice — and no one does shearling like Ralph Lauren, so this camel number might be worth the slight splurge.
Outerwear Trends for Fall/Winter 2024: Draped Details
Coats with built-in scarves and other creative draping add some architectural flavor to your winter wardrobe. Want to get the look for less? Try this H&M scarf coat that would work with everything from denim to dresses (the shorter length is ideal for many skirt silhouettes too).
Cocoa Brown
While burgundy, oxblood, camel, and of course black are great options for a new fall coat, the hue we’re loving at the moment is a deep chocolate or cocoa brown. It’s as versatile as your beloved black but the slightly softer shade is a little less harsh, making it potentially more flattering for sunshine-deprived skin. This Italian wool knee-length coat from Quince is a steal for under $200, but you can find this shade at all price points. Prefer something more casual? This Alo overcoat is waterproof and super sleek.
