There’s something about fall that makes us want to switch up our silhouette. Of course, if you live somewhere with all four seasons, you probably need to add a layer out of necessity. But even if not, when the calendar shifts to September we’re ready for something new. Here are 7 skirt silhouettes for women over 50 to try for Fall/Winter 2024.
Skirt Silhouettes for Women Over 50
One of the easiest ways to accomplish a new look with the added bonus of staying current is by choosing a different hemline. If you’re a skirt or dress person, that’s as easy as going longer or shorter, or perhaps opting for more or less volume depending on what’s on-trend for you.
Details like a bit of asymmetrical, a more dramatic slit, or a new material like rich leather or a nubby textured knit can also help keep your look fresh. Or just lend a new twist to your favorite silhouettes and lengths.

7 Skirt Styles for Fall/Winter 2024
Here are some of the most popular skirt shapes and lengths for fall/winter 2024.
Structured Wraps
We always love a wrap skirt, but they can be a little challenging to wear (or prone to wardrobe malfunctions). However, there are plenty of more structured options on the racks this fall, like this faux leather version by Area Stars. It would definitely stay closed and look amazing with a chunky sweater or slim turtleneck plus tights and boots
For something lighter, this DKNY wrap is an under $50 steal.
Long With A Slit
A casual maxi can work for cold weather, provided it is tailored and made of a heavier material like this skirt from Abercrombie & Fitch (yes, that Abercrombie — we were surprised too). Just add boots and a cozy sweater or cropped jacket on top.
Satin Midis
If you’re in the market for a festive skirt that can easily be dressed up for a date night (but still pretty comfortable), a satin midi skirt might do the trick. Pick up a cheap and cheerful option from VividHarbor via Amazon in your favorite color — we’re fans of the apple green or wine red for fall, or keep it neutral with classic black.
Full A-Lines
We love a skirt that’s a bit assertive, like this J.Crew midi skirt.
Or something with pleats and a pattern that pops, like this one from Maeve at Anthropologie. If you’re loving the current wide leg pants and generally like more volume on your lower half, try these voluminous a-line skirts for a dressier look that’s not too dainty.
(Faux) Leather Skirts
If you are into (faux) leather, this season is your time to shine. We love leather in slightly unexpected silhouettes, like this a-line midi from Tuckernuck. It would be ideal for dressing up with a silk or lace top or dressing down with a tee and sneakers, making a leather skirt like this a more versatile purchase than you’d think.
Asymmetrical Skirts
Skip the high-low asymmetry and go for something that creates a diagonal line to look current — and flatter your figure. This black style with soft pleats by COS is a subtle take on the trend that would be perfect with a fitted tee, a tucked-in button-up, or even a boxier sweater or sweatshirt.
Ribbed Knit Skirts
A.k.a. Sweater skirts, these can be a bit too body-con for many of us (but if you can rock it, we salute you!). An easy way to get in on this exceedingly comfy trend is this ribbed midi from LOFT with its well-placed ruching and a slit to keep it from being a hobble-skirt.
An added bonus, this fall is definitely the time to stock up on a new basic black skirt or two if that’s a workhorse in your wardrobe. We’ve seen plenty of different versions, so you can find the shape, length, and fabrication you prefer with relatively minimal effort.
