While flipping through a spring fashion magazine (I mean a physical paper magazine which I still like to read) I noticed a color trend in some of the ads that really stood out. Designers like Fendi and Valentino used caramel colored neutral bases with bold shots of neon color in their accessories. It’s a fresh new color combination for Spring 2023.
A Fresh New Color Combination for Spring
This color combination stood out to me as something exciting and new in my 50 years of flipping though fashion magazines (if I can remember). What I like about this trend is these rich neutral base colors appear to be more flattering than the usual beige or khaki. You can find a shade that works best for you.

It prompted me to take a look at the Spring/Summer 2023 Core Classics fashion colors from Pantone. Sure enough, they listed some of these rich neutrals. “Macchiato” is “a delectible brown with a light layer of foam”, and “Vanilla Cream” is “a soft and delicious creamy tone.” Don’t these colors look and sound yummy? They make me want to run to Starbucks right now.
Bright Colors, Neon Colors, Citrus Colors for Spring
We already know that bright colors are on trend for spring and when you are over 50 you may not want to wear neon head-to-toe. That’s another reason to try this trend. You can wear small doses of the seasons bold colors in the form of your shoes, handbag, or accessories with your base colors in neutrals.
Or another way to wear the pop of color trend with neutrals is with a bright t-shirt, jacket, sweater or skirt. Keep in mind that the eye will be drawn to the bright color, the neutrals will recede and that piece of fashion will be accentuated. For example, see how the bright orange skirt at Valentino stands out in the runway photo above. So choose what part of your body you would like to stand out in a bold color.
A Personalized Color Trend
This trend is customized just for you because you can pick your favorite bright color for your accent with the neutrals. Think yellow, lavender, Barbicore hot pink, lime, Kellycore green, cobalt, orange or tomato red. Choose a color that makes you smile.
You can also choose the right neutral base color or combination of neutral shades that are right for your skin tone. I recommend going slightly lighter or slightly darker to contrast and enhance your skin tone.
How To Style The Neutrals With Bright Colors Trend
Here are some outfits I put together. You don’t have to pay designer prices to get the look.
Neutral Trench With Bright Green Accents
Choose only one or two accessories for your pop of bright color to get the look. Don’t go with a matching bag and shoes.
Sam Edelman Belted Trench Coat, $190
24/7 Comfort Apparel Midi Fit and Flare Dress in Wheat, $47.99
Tory Burch Perry Triple Compartment Leather Tote, $398
Open Edit Vida Slingback Pointed Toe Pump in Green Vibrant, $59.95
Aire 51mm Ceres Rectangular Sunglasses, $39
Neutral Suit With A Pop of Hot Pink
An easy way to dress head-to-toe neutral is with a blazer and pant suit with a nude or neutral t-shirt and slide sandals. Then add one pop of your favorite color with your handbag.
Open Edit Oversize Linen Blend Blazer, $79
Open Edit Linen Blend Trousers, $69
Skims Fits Everybody T-Shirt in Clay, $48
Sam Edelman Bay Cutout Slide Sandal in Almond, $120
Hobo Darling Leather Crossbody Bag in Flamingo, $198
Neutral Separates With Bright Orange Pieces
Put together wardrobe separates in tonal neutrals. As you can see, the neutral base colors do not need to match exactly, but blend together. Mix up fabrics and textures for a more dimensional look. Then add a pop of color with a slide sandal and/or t-shirt in a bright color.
Bagatelle Stretch Nylon Crop Trench Coat, $49.97
H&M Canvas Cargo Pants, $24.99
Allsaints Eemelyn Shimmer V-Neck T-Shirt, $65
Schutz Fairy Slide Sandal, $98
House of Want Clutch in Parchment, $98
Other Neutrals
Lastly, I know wearing all neutral colors are tricky and certainly not for everyone! So you can always wear a base of black, white, olive or brown to get a similar look.
Are you going to try the neutral with a bright color trend for spring and summer? How would you wear it?
