If you love stripes — pinstripes, classic Breton tops, and similar pieces (those of you who have never met a striped top you didn’t like, you know who you are) — but are looking for ways to liven things up, then you might want to consider changing direction. Or more literally, zigging and zagging with a wavy stripe or zig zag print.
How To Wear Zig Zag Prints
Everyone probably recognizes the Missoni zig zag knits (even if they don’t know the name or the origin of this iconic motif), but there are lots of ways to do zig zags or chevrons that don’t require shelling out for the label or wearing wavy stripes head-to-toe. Here’s how to wear zig zag prints for summer 2023.
Zig Zag Knit Dresses
A zig zag print dress definitely draws the eye — it’s not a look for the faint of heart. This BCBG Generation dress is a bit more subtle than most options with a soft taupe and ivory print.

Or you could go all-in with something like this cap-sleeve a-line dress from Shoshanna.
Not quite ready to do a full-on zig zag dress? Try picking up a cheap and chic swimsuit cover-up to wear on vacation, like this one from Wander Agio via Amazon.
Zig Zag Tops
It’s a little easier to wear than a full-on zig zag dress, a printed chevron or zig zag striped top or sweater can be a fun piece to mix into your closet, like this open knit cardigan sweater from Free People.
Zig Zag Shoes
A zig zag print works as well on an espadrille as it does on a sneaker. These MIssoni espadrilles are splurge-worthy and the print is a modern classic. You’ll be able to wear them every summer or on every beach vacation for years.
Zig Zag Bags
Doing wavy stripes or chevron print on a tote or sack bag is simple and these prints can be surprisingly versatile, especially for summer. For example, this colorful South Beach bag from ASOS would brighten up even the simplest outfit.
Zig Zag Print Scarves
If you love the prints but only in small doses, then try a scarf. Throw it over a simple jacket or chambray top or tie it around your handbag for a pop of fun. This Missoni scarf is a perfect option for a fraction of the original cost.
Zig Zag Jewelry
Perfect for fans of statement jewelry, you can find pieces that zig and zag a little, such as this stacking ring from Adina Eden. Go subtle with one, or make a statement with a whole stack.
Zig Zag Linens
If you love the print but aren’t quite thrilled at the idea of wearing wavy lines, then there are tons of linens and home goods that incorporate the print, like this throw from Happycare Textiles. It’s a great way to bring visual interest into a more neutral palette or room, or mix zig zags with florals, regular stripes, polkas, or other abstract prints.
Mixing Other Prints with Zig Zags
One thing about zig zag prints is that they play well with others, so if you are into pattern mixing you can have a field day. Just make sure there is a common color thread woven through the patterns and the proportions play well together (typically, one larger or bolder print paired with a smaller or finer pattern works well).
