One of the most surprisingly difficult things to find, in our opinion, is a casual summer shoe that has more polish than a sneaker but isn’t as bare as a sandal. After all, sometimes we need something a bit dressier but can’t always make it in for a pedicure or would otherwise prefer a closed toe. If you have similar footwear dilemmas, you’re in luck. We’ve rounded up our favorite closed-toe summer shoes that are a little more grown-up than your basic sneakers or tennis shoes.
Casual Closed-Toe Summer Shoes
1. Mules
Perhaps nothing is as easy to wear as a mule that you can just slip on and off, and there are plenty of options ranging from basic to boldly embellished. These can be a great option if you want to go for a more upscale or luxurious look; for example, these suede pointed toe Cole Haans would definitely elevate a basic outfit and they wouldn’t be out of place with dressier pieces either.
2. Loafers
Similar to mules, these read as dressier but are still super comfortable and work well with pants (cropped or full length). While chunky black loafers are great for fall and winter, in the summer we like something lighter with a more refined shape, like this sleek pair by Born in a natural warm beige leather.

3. Topsiders
This preppy staple really always works in the summer, especially if you tend to favor more classic or traditional pieces. There’s nothing wrong with Sperrys in the classic brown shade, but going for a color or metallic like this silvery pair looks fresher.
4. Espadrilles
A favorite in hot climates for a reason, espadrilles are lightweight and just scream summer, especially with a sundress or palazzo pants. Pretty much any color of espadrille works well — black goes with (nearly) everything and bright colors can be fun, but we also appreciate the surprising versatility of a leopard print like these Stuart Weitzmans.
5. Ballet Flats
This classic shoe is back with a vengeance and they really are that versatile. Pair them with everything from casual or even more formal dresses to shorts and tees. While there’s no shortage of options, we’re kind of loving this Barbie-core option from Franco Sarto — the boxy toe and minimalist styling feels modern.
6. Huaraches
This somewhat traditional woven leather style makes a great addition to your summer footwear wardrobe, since they are light and open enough to pair with flowy, delicate pieces without dragging the overall look down. We like this ankle-strap version from Seychelles for an ultra-feminine look.
7. Slingbacks
While slingback styles are often associated with high heels, a slingback flat or small block heel (especially with a pointed toe like these Vince Camutos) makes for a great summer look that’s very of-the-moment.
