For many of us September 22, the first day of fall, showcased some much-anticipated fall weather. The temperature dropped and the beautiful, low 60s sweater weather graced us with its presence. I was able to try out one of my favorite fall trends, one that I think can work for anyone and especially women over 50. Let’s talk about fuzzy sweaters for fall.
Fuzzy Sweaters for Fall 2022
I know it can be easy to immediately think of youth when this trend comes up, but it’s actually quite the contrary. The softness and texture of the fabric of this trend when paired with the right pieces, can look incredibly sophisticated and luxe. There are so many new and fun ways to wear this trend, you can take it in many different directions. One nice thing about fuzzy sweaters for fall is that they are both comfortable and warm; and who nowadays doesn’t want that? They also make the perfect transition piece so they can be worn as a cardigan style over any of the other stylish fall trends. Let’s take a look at some options that can help you dive into this trend.
Pull Over Fuzzy Sweaters
I think this is the easiest way to jump into this trend. It’s pretty simple to pick a color and a style that you like and just throw it on with your favorite pair of pants or fall skirt. You can even wear one over a dress. The most basic option is one like this fluffy knit sweater in mint green from ASOS. The silhouette is simple, and the V-neck is universally flattering. However, the color makes this sweater a little unexpected for fall, as it’s not a traditional fall color. You can pair it with a pair of cozy corduroy pants or a midi skirt with some fall boots.

If you are looking for an options that is a bit more stylized, you can go with something like this Scotch & Soda fuzzy puff sleeve sweater. I like the neutral color and the subtle stripes. It makes a lovely fall piece that can easily be a wardrobe staple and will pair well with something as simple as a pair of dark wash jeans and loafers. Finally, if you want to try something more out of the box, you can go with an option like this eyelash sweater tee from Anthropologie. There are so many great style elements to this one; the mock neck, the cutout in the back and the rich color all make this a beautiful option for the fuzzy sweater trend.
Cardigan Fuzzy Sweaters
For some, it can be easier to add a cardigan as a topper to an existing outfit. The best thing about the fuzzy sweater trend is that you can incorporate it into your wardrobe in just that way. Creating the final additions to an outfit by using a fuzzy sweater is a wonderful way to try this trend. I found this fuzzy cardigan from Urban Outfitters that will make a statement. The bright pink color and pattern is reminiscent of the nineties so you can lean into that current trend. Pair it with a pair of mom jeans and chunky loafers.
If a more simple option is better for you, you can try something like this feminine and soft cream cardigan. This is perfect to wear out or also can be comfortable to lounge around the house. You can also add your favorite pair of leggings to it and do either! And don’t forget your comfortable shoes. Finally, If you want to splurge a little bit on this trend, try something a little higher end like this green fuzzy open-front cardigan. It’s perfect if you want something in a more traditional fall color; the hunter green color screams fall. It also has a little structure to it and the folded collar gives it interesting detail. This sweater would pair well with another rich material, like leather or suede and will look beautiful with brown, mustard yellow or rich gray.
Fuzzy Sweater Expert Style Tips
- Let the pattern be prominent. Between the texture of the fuzziness and a bold pattern, you’ll want to keep the rest of your outfit pretty simple. Let the sweater be the focal point of the outfit and keep everything else simple in silhouette and neutral in color. However, I would encourage oversized metallic jewelry to have some fun with accessories. Think a bracelet, necklace or pair of earrings to keep the outfit interesting.
- Mind your proportions. For this trend, you don’t want to do it too oversized, especially if you are opting for a pullover. You run the risk of looking like a Muppet! You want a sweater that will work proportionately with the rest of your outfit. If are wearing wide-leg jeans, try a slimmer fit sweater, if you are wearing skinny jeans, oversized is OK, but go with a cardigan instead. Then you can balance out the fullness of the sweater with a slimmer top underneath.
- Be mindful of quality. This is one of those trends where you don’t want to go too cheap. A poorly made fuzzy sweater runs the risk of shedding, stretching out and just looking overall bad. I’m not saying you should splurge on this trend, but there are plenty of options and brands that offer up a happy medium.
