Now that we have officially entered into the season for fall fashion, it’s time to get serious about your fall wardrobe. If you’re anything like me, you probably began to think about this in August! But if not, now is the time when you will see all of the fall trends starting to be merchandised in your favorite stores. You can begin visualizing what kind of items you want and try them out to see what inspires you.
I think what makes fall fashion so fun and exciting is that there are so many options. Unlike summer, where I think there are more limitations because you are trying to keep cool, fall and winter are more interesting because you can layer and add item upon item to fit your personal preference and style. Keep in mind as you build your collection for fall 2019, the elegant details are what make the difference.
What Are This Fall’s Elegant Details?
Distinguished color combinations, sleek silhouettes, strategic ties and knots, pleats, belts and studding all have carved out a place in fall fashion. Those details are what makes this season something to be excited about!

Elegant Fashion Details On the Runway
We all know that designers can really bring it when it comes to fall. The rich fabrics, the deep colors and the sophisticated and elevated styling and details prove which designers reign supreme when the cool weather comes. One of the sleek silhouettes I’m super excited about this year is the re-appearance of the cape! There is such a short window to wear them in Chicago (before it gets too cold) but designers like Marc Jacobs provide plenty of options to fit in for the season. I loved the full length, wool cheetah print cape he sent down the runway. It’s not the most subtle option to choose, but the intense richness and overall luxe feel is enough to keep me from being afraid to wear it for a special occasion.
How To Incorporate Elegant Details In Your Wardrobe
It’s all in the details with items like this and a little can go a long way when translated into everyday wear. I feel like the best way to start with this trend can be a piece of outwear or a statement coat or cape. I absolutely love a good coat or cape, and now that capes are back in style for the season, take this time to rock one with confidence during this transitional weather.
This Chloe wool cape would be a great investment piece to wear during the early fall until the weather gets too cold. You can also take it into early spring. I love how this cape translates into a casual look but can be paired well with twill trousers. The orange contrast trim creates an unexpected pop of color and gives it a sporty vibe which is perfect for a weekend on-the-go.
You can also go the shoe route to show off elegant details such as strategic ties and knots. Incorporate these Ted Baker London boots into your everyday rotation. Tall boots can be worn with virtually anything these days, so pull these on with a pair of jeans or a pleated skirt for a polished yet comfortable look. The knotted ankle detail set them apart from your traditional riding boots.
If you want to take a bit of a risk give these Topshop wide leg trousers a try. I’d be the first to admit that I didn’t think pleated pants would make a comeback. But somehow these pants just work and look incredibly elevated with the skinny belt and wide leg openings that create a timeless silhouette. I would keep the rest of my outfit simple and pair the pants with a high quality white tee, black leather jacket or blazer and perhaps some patent leather menswear inspired oxford shoes.
Expert Style Tips
1. Invest in elegance.
You may think some of these fall trends are over-the-top, but if you take a look back throughout the decades, you’ll see that most of these beautiful elegant details have cycled in and out of closets for many years. As much as you thought pleated pants were out for good, guess what? They are back and they are fabulous! So don’t be afraid to invest in a high quality piece that may have an unexpected but chic detail that’s trendy too. It’s more than likely once you get your wear out of it this time around, you’ll be able to pull it out of your closet again a few years from now.
2. Take the opportunity to go high/low.
I’m personally not planning on spending a small fortune on all of my fall wardrobe. Buying into this trend is better if you shop for fall pieces priced at all ends of the spectrum. You may want to take some time on finding the right pair of pleated or belted trousers to invest in, but want a few trendy tops at a lower price point that you can pair with them that look fabulous but don’t break the bank. This blouson sleeve peplum top from Express could be a great addition to your wardrobe at just $29.94. Considering the Victorian and Edwardian styles are big this fall, you’d continue to be right on trend.
3. Elegance doesn’t have to be boring.
I know we love to talk about timelessness and classic, staple pieces – but don’t get wrapped up in the simplicity of basic staples. That may not be for you, so don’t fall victim to it. Use your own eclectic style to find the elegant details that work with your style persona. I love leather jackets, and as much as I adore a classic moto jacket, I also love the idea of this Alice + Olivia patch draped jacket. I would wear this exactly the same way as I would a basic black jacket. The quality is beautiful and the details are unexpected, but well-constructed. This will be one of those fabulous heirloom pieces you’ll be excited to wear over the years and then hand down to your fashion protégé.
