The fall 2019 fashion week runways have us excited for the next fall/winter and the new trends. Yet, as is true with every new season, some trends pop up that we simply must avoid. Yes, we understand the fashion week presentations are a show, and sometimes the looks are more over-the-top than what designers actually sell to stores. But we worry some women will take these fashion week looks right off the models and run with them. Like in real life. So take our advice, some are not practical trends, and they must be avoided! We took a look at New York, London, Milan and Paris Fall 2019 RTW. Here are the top 9 Fall 2019 fashion trends to avoid if you’re over 40.
Fall 2019 Fashion Trends To Avoid
1. Short Shorts and Slouchy Boots
This short shorts with slouchy boots trend stood out to me because it was something totally new! And something most women, especially those who are over 40, totally should not wear! Why? Do I really need to explain? It’s going to draw attention to your thigh. Enough said. Leave this look to the 20 and 30 year olds. I will actually like it on them. As seen at: Altuzarra, Isabel Marant and Saint Laurent.

2. Sheer Evening Looks
There was an exorbitant number of sheer evening looks on all the runways from New York to Paris for Fall ’19. Yes, most of them were black, but still they were much too revealing. After women figure out what they can wear under them, perhaps you will see these looks on real people. Most women over 40 will simply skip it! Or wear a modified version of the trend with, say, sheer sleeves. As seen at: Alberta Ferretti, Alxander Wang and Elie Saab
3. Onesies
I could not believe I saw these unflattering one-piece-wonders again for Fall ’19. Granted these “onesies” are meant for the younger set, but, because the look is so covered up, I’m worried women over 40 may think they can wear them, too. They have no shape, and you will look like an oversized infant. The onesie is meant to be worn by babies only. As seen at: Ace and Jig, AG and APC
4. Bra Tops
Needless to say, most women over 40 will not be sporting the bra top look (God willing). And this look is for fall? They make me feel chilly just looking at them. Brrrr. As seen at: Acne Studios, Giambattista Valli and Sally LaPointe
5. Puffers Jackets for Dress Up
This concept of wearing a pretty puffer jacket over a skirt or dress is an OK idea, when it is done right. But to “try this at home” there is simply too much room for error! I get the idea of wearing a puffer, perhaps instead of a leather biker jacket, but it can easily turn into appearing as if you threw a snow jacket over your dress in a hurry. Puffer jackets for dress up is a fun look for 20-somethings, but if you don’t get it right, it is best to avoid the trend. As seen at: Chanel, Christian Siriano and Jonathan Simkhai
6. Oversized Screen Prints
First of all, I was happy to see less oversized screen graphics, logos and word prints on the runway than for Spring 2019. (I bet some of those items just didn’t sell.) Yet oversize screen prints were still present for Fall 2019. I would have worn any of these looks in my 20s and even 30s, but I don’t recommend them for women over 40 because they look like comic strips. Besides, do you really want billboard attention? And can you even picture yourself in one? As seen at: Alexander Wang, Christopher Kane and Valentino
7. Tight Micro Mini
OK, skirts on the runway are often short, but, for fall 2019 the mini’s were tight micro-mini! Women over 40 must avoid this trend because it’s just ridiculous, even if you have the best legs in the world! You will never be able to sit down, either. As seen at: Alice and Olivia, AREA and Balenciaga
8. Deep V or No Shirt at All
Deep v-necks that plunge to the belly (or no top at all) were shown (yes, again) on the runways for Fall ’19. Very few women will wear this look even if they are under 40. But you know what? I say yes, go ahead and wear the deep V! Just put a top on under it! Only a few celebrities over 40 can get away with this look. As seen at: Ann Demeulemeester, Blumarine and Proenza Schouler
9. Supersized Shoulders
Most of the designers got the oversized shoulder perfected for Fall ’19. However, in a few instances, they went to the extreme. You will know they went too far if you feel like Krystle Carrington when you try on this look. Actually, if you watched Dynasty and wore large shoulders in the 80’s, you are assuredly too old for massive shoulders this go-around. Please skip this trend if you are over 40. As seen at: Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Attico and Stella McCartney
Are there any of these fall winter fashion trends that you feel you can rock over 40? Or do you think there is another trend to avoid for fall 2019?

I love your column but have to disagree with what you all onesies. I call them jumpsuits and think they are very stylish if worn on a well proportioned body! The rest, well I completely agree with and even got a chuckle just thinking about wearing them!
That’s OK. You don’t have to agree with them all. I love jumpsuits too. It’s the ones with no shape I have issue with and wearing a belt with them is problematic when you are over 40 and have to pee, quickly!
