It’s time to review the best fall 2019 fashion trends for women over 40. We have covered fashion week trends for over fifteen years, and fall is always the most exciting season at Fountain Of 30. Being in NYC and Chicago, we practically wear fall fashion year round (or at least for nine months) so it is important to see what’s new and to stay on trend. Besides, the fall runways offer so many options including sweaters, dresses, pants, jackets, coats, stockings, handbags, hats, shoes and boots. There is so much to see for fall. Layer it on, especially when you are over 40.
Every new season comes with new trends and some (even if they keep you all covered up) are simply not appropriate for women over 40. (Stay tuned to laugh at those in our next article). But we did find many Fall 2019 trends we think are totally appropriate, functional and beautiful, too. So if you did not have time to weed though the fashion week runway photos, I did it for you. There is a lot to take away from this season, and I must say overall, I am very impressed. Here are 11 of the best fall ’19 trends for women over 40.
11 of The Best Fall 2019 Fashion Trends
1. Statement Coats

Coats for Fall ’19 are no longer your basic black or grey wool. Designers used screen prints, oversize shapes, bold colors, embellishments, oversized checks and plaids, heavy textured wools, colorful shearlings, furs and colorblocked leather. The coat for Fall ’19 makes a big statement. So if you get one new piece to update your wardrobe for fall, be on the lookout for a statement coat. 2. Black Matrix Leather
Women over 40 can rejoice because one of the fall 2019 fashion trends is cool black leather is back with a vengeance. Slick and shiny or matte black, Matrix style leather dominated the runways. The best looks were head to toe leather. Pictured above: Balenciaga, Hermes, and Sally La Pointe.
3. Bold Monochrome Color
Monochrome looks are not only striking, but also makes you look pulled together and are slimming. The Fall ’19 runways showed head to toe looks in gorgeous colors from bold brights to rich gemstone hues. For women over 40 gemstone colors are your best bet. So go ahead and pick your favorite color for Fall ’19! Pictured above: Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab and Akris.
4. Deconstructed Suiting
Deconstructed suiting may remind you of one of the fashion trendd from the past (like the 90s?), but this is one look you should welcome. Designers added a bit of asymmetry and interest to menswear-inspired suiting. These suits are much more exciting than your basic business suit. Throw on an unusual jacket and you are ultra chic for Fall ’19. Oh and I recommend wearing a top under your jacket if you are over 40! Pictured above: Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Simkhai and Proenza Schouler.
5. Asymmetric Off Shoulder
There is a new twist on the one shoulder look for fall ’19. Designers went a bit “off center” to show a little shoulder. Pictured above: Oscar de la Renta, Self-Portait, and Badgley Mischka.
6. Capes
Capes reigned supreme on the runway for Fall ’19. Another dramatic option to the statement coat, capes were shown in a variety of fabrics from wool to leather to fur. There were mini, midi and maxi lengths as well as short capelets over dresses and as parts of jackets. Pictured above: Narciso Rodriguez, Chanel and Miu Miu.
7. Strong Shoulders, Nipped Waist
There’s no denying this tailored shape of a strong shoulder with a nipped waist is super flattering. You will see some extreme shoulder padded looks, too, but this slightly exaggerated shoulder is best for women over 40. Pictured above: Givenchy, Alexander McQueen and Proenza Schouler.
8. Tuxedo Looks
Tuxedos are always in, so I almost did not list this trend, but this season the looks were exceptional! The tuxedo looks were absolutely gorgeous, with shiny crystal embellishments and fantastic tailoring. A tuxedo jacket is ideal for those borderline black tie events in the fall and winter, and a perfectly appropriate look for women over 40. Pictured Above: Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Saint Laurent.
9. Billowy Sleeves
The big billowy sleeve looks are back for fall ’19, only this season you will have a variety of choices. Designers added ruffles and gathers on sleeves on everything from romantic florals to edgy sporty looks. The tie neck and pussy bow blouse was shown in many collections, too. Pictured Above: Andrew Gn, Louis Vuitton, and Giambattista Valli.
10. High Neck Collars and Bows
I love to cover my neck (don’t many women over 40?) and these high neck collars will keep us warm, fashionable and covered! We are happy this is one of the fall 2019 fashion trends. Designers showed big dramatic bows, high ruffled collars, and super structured collars buttoned all the way up. Pictured above: Celine, Rodarte and Fendi.
11. Oversize Florals for Evening
Florals sprouted up on evening wear in a big way for Fall ’19. Yes the floral prints on the runways were large and oversized! These bold and dramatic florals are making their mark for fall and you will certainly make a statement when you wear them. Pictured above: Oscar de la Renta, Peter Pilotto and Marc Jacobs.
Which of these trends do you see yourself wearing this fall?
