While we’re never happy to see summer end, there is one thing that we love about the changing of the seasons – it’s time to switch things up. There’s something about fall that always makes us ready to update our wardrobes. Maybe it’s the memory of getting new clothes for school, maybe it’s excitement about finally getting to wear layers or maybe it is just because the fall trends are so great this year – especially for women over forty. We put the best of the 2019 season together just for you. Here are our top 10 fall 2019 trends for women over 40.
Fall 2019 Trends for Women Over 40
1. Deep Green
From emerald to forest to hunter green, all hues of rich dark green are trending and there is a shade for everyone. Get the look for less with this chiffon blouse from Amazon or go luxe with this Jane Post velvet coat.
Asymmetrical necklines and hemlines are starting to move from trendy to classic, and they can be extremely flattering. They can show off your collarbone and shoulders or a great pair of legs. These are some assets that you are likely to want to show off after forty. This stunning deep green Azeeza velvet off-of-one-shoulder dress is perfectly on point this fall – and forever – and it would be an amazing pick for a seriously special occasion this fall or winter. For more something more casual but still special, this Ralph Lauren draped one-shoulder jumpsuit is an excellent choice.

Blame it on Game of Thrones and all the amazing capes worn in the show or just a love of drama, but capes, cape-effect coats, blazers and even dresses and jumpsuits with cape details are going to be one of the major fall 2019 trends this seaon. This tailored Kobi Halperin cape blazer is definitely a power look, and this Jones New York cape coat will update your outerwear this season.
4. Maxi Coats
If you prefer a coat over a cape, you can get a similar dramatic look with a nearly floor length midi or maxi coat. This pale Tiffany blue Mackage coat is simply gorgeous, but the price is right for this BCBG faux-shearling style coat.
This traditional houndstooth pattern is back and more interesting than ever. Take summer’s midi skirt trend into fall with this Vince Camuto houndstooth midi (this skirt is a great option to wear now with bare legs and then with black tights once it gets chillier), or pick up a simple black and white houndstooth scarf as a quick way to update your outerwear.
6. Lug Soles
We don’t mean the Doc Martens that you used to wear in your teens or twenties (although classic Docs will always have some appeal). The lug-soled boot has grown up with its rare combination of chic and practical styling for fall and winter. This Rag & Bone style is a refined version of the boots you likely grew up with, and these Valentino mid-calf lace-up boots are to die for.
7. Modern Pearls
These aren’t your typical demure pearl studs or grandma’s single strand necklaces. We’re big fans of long dangling pearl drop earrings like these by Saskia Diez and pearl hoops like these by Meadow Lark.
8. Belted Jackets
Put away your boyfriend blazers for the season and go for a cinched look that emphasizes your waist like this classic olive jacket by Envelope1976 or this rust colored velvet blazer by PAIGE.
9. Edwardian and Victorian Inspiration
Romantic lacy blouses with puffed sleeves might seem difficult to pull off, but the trick is to modernize them with sleek accessories and pair them with more casual pieces. This bright green peasant style from Anthropologie is a fun version and this Halogen lace detail blouse is a subtle take on the trend. And we’re loving this black lace paneled sweatshirt (also from Anthropologie) for a dressed-up casual look.
10. Dark Florals
Florals for fall might not be more groundbreaking than florals for spring, but there are plenty of options. This Ann Taylor black v-neck top with an elegant floral print is a nice long-sleeved alternative to the typical button down blouse, while this All In Favor floral print midi-dress is sweetly feminine. And this Olivia Burton black floral watch is just fun!
We’re definitely sorry to see summer go (although we still do wear white after Labor Day). But picking out some new pieces for our autumn wardrobes makes up for it. What is your favorite season to dress for and what trends are you looking forward to wearing this fall?
