We choose the best celebrity street style stars from the past year and look forward to seeing what they will wear in the future. Eva Mendes, Priyanka Chopra, Kate Middleton and Kate Bosworth are the ones to watch.
What is street style? Let’s begin with a definition. Street style, by the book, or Wikipedia in this matter, is a specific fashion style that originally comes from British fashion culture. In essence, it is a comprehensive approach to fashion and produces looks from a wide variety of diverse styles and “fashion considerations.”
The “street” approach to style is based on individualism, rather than focusing on current fashion trends. Bill Cunningham, the iconic street style photographer for The New York Times, once said the streets can tell a lot about fashion and people, “The best fashion show is definitely on the street. Always has been, and always will be.”

While it’s true that street style has always existed, it has really come alive in the 20th century and even more so in the last decade. That’s because capturing street style from fashion shows and essentially “on the streets” has become so much more than a professional photographer and the right moment.
With the phenomena of social media and the smartphone, anyone can be a street style photographer and anyone can be a street style fashion model. Not to mention that the onslaught of paparazzi in this modern age capturing celebs in the best and worst possible moments is just another great example of the development of street style fashion.
Celebrity Street Style Stars
In this case, we are going to look at a few of the best celebrity street style looks in the past year and how great they look on the fly (or not.)
Actress Eva Mendes is one of those perfectly coiffed individuals who always looks effortlessly chic on the fly when the paparazzi just happen to capture her on the street. (Does she know they are there? is the question.) Oh sure, she could argue, “I’m a mom now. I spend my days with my babies in sweats,” but her incredibly stylish New York & Company line as well as the way she looks on the street would certainly make you think otherwise.
Eva Mendes made a rare public appearance in late January, stepping out for coffee in Los Angeles, California. I would love to look that good stepping out for coffee. But since the public appearance is a rare one, I guess she wanted to look her absolute best. And she did. The star wore a red midi dress under a pink print coat with swept-back hair, grey suede knee-high boots, and oversized sunglasses.
It’s not easy to dress head-to-toe in the same color (albeit different tones of the same color). However, Priyanka Chopra, the queen of looking great on the street, pulls it off without a hitch.
Back in October, Priyanka Chopra stepped out wearing fuschia – or is it pink? – to promote her latest Bollywood film “The Sky Is Pink.” The actress wore a full Rebecca Vallance look from her fuschia turtleneck to bubblegum pink skirt, pairing it with a pointed heel and a lot of matching makeup.
Priyanka can make it happen with bold color, but could you? This is not a look I would recommend trying at home, unless you do it right. But she is obviously doing it to get photographed and she certainly caught our attention, if nothing else.
In essence, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, is a bonafide celebrity street style star but that has happened for two reasons. One, she knows fashion, knows her own style, and knows what looks good on her.
While it’s true, she probably has an amazing stylist to boot, she also knows her go-to designers, what looks good on her petite frame. She also sticks to her classic British style, which is classy, trendy and even budget-friendly. Printed, demure dresses, elegant coats, and pops of color are all part of the package.
The second reason is that by nature of her position and line of work, she is obviously going to be photographed everywhere she goes. She has to look the part, if not for the monarchy, then to bring attention to her patronages.
In late January, Duchess Kate made an unannounced visit to the LEYF Stockwell Gardens Nursery and Pre-school to help serve breakfast to children. This was a “casual event” which meant strict collars and heels were not in order. Still, she looked as stylish as ever in a blue coat, white Sezanne sweater, and black ankle boots.
While Kate Bosworth is known, she isn’t as well-known as, say, Kate Middleton. But while she’s not as recognizable for her movie roles, there is one element that makes her utterly recognizable. Her street style! Kate Bosworth is the ultimate chic street style fashionista, when she’s dressed down or donning fashion for the camera.
The picture up top, while taken a year ago, is the perfect example of her street style. She is dressed up in white heels and an effortless black maxi dress. That dress has something that is going to make her noticed – those slits and cut-outs!
So why is she an undeniable street style star? Well, not only does she make everything she wears look effortless, but she also almost always adds some kind of urban kick. And isn’t that what street style is all about?
