Celebrities and designers took part last night in the annual awards ceremony for the Council of Fashion Awards (CFDA) 2021, which honors the best of the fashion industry. Emily Blunt hosted the evening in Midtown Manhattan filled with fashion stars on hand to present, and it seemed many were glad to be at the event, in-person, as it was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Some of the well-known designers who were honored include Christopher John Rogers for American Womenswear Designer of the Year, Demna Gvasalia for Balenciaga for International Women’s Designer of the Year, and Nina Garcia for Media Award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard. Virgil Abloh from Louis Vuitton, Miuccia Prada, and Rick Owens were also up for awards.
The celebs that were highlighted include the spectacular Anya Taylor-Joy for Face of the Year and Zendaya for the Fashion Icon Award. At just 25 years old, Zendaya is the youngest ever recipient of this award. As someone who went from wearing Target on the Disney Channel to Valentino couture on the red carpet (and on Instagram) when the pandemic called for it, Zendaya clearly deserves this impressive award for her fashion evolution.

The CFDA Fashion Awards 2021
She continued to impress at the awards ceremony, in a bandeau bra top and red skirt with a bubble waist. The crop top effect may seem childish, but I beg to disagree — apparently it’s a trend right now (Emily Ratajkowski also wore it.) That doesn’t mean I have to like it…but I digress.
Anya Taylor-Joy is always a little pixie delight! She looks exquisite in Oscar de la Renta, which is a little ironic because she is a global ambassador for Dior. But really, this look is everything down to the leopard print gloves from Gigi Burris Millinery and the purple shoes from Stuart Weitzman. I love the sculpted feel of the purple moire suit, which, like Zendaya’s ensemble, gives the feel of playing fashion costume dress-up.
Here are some other statement looks:
There was a lot of black on the red carpet tonight (more on that later) but Emily Blunt stole the show with a fun pop of color and an oversize suit. Interestingly enough, there was only a blazer and pants and no top but she called attention to her neckline with a bold diamond Bulgari pendant.
Sometimes I wonder if the fashion world looks down on Vera Wang, but she’s probably better known now for her mass market appeal than she is for her fashion couture. Apparently, I am wrong though because the CFDA likes to celebrate the designers who have staying power and Ms. Wang is certainly here to stay. I thought this was one of the best looks of the night.
I’m not a big fan of the cupcake look, and especially not on Drew Barrymore, but I can understand why she went with this look. Again, a couple of the celebs on hand tonight wore outfits I would have never expected them to wear — like they were having fun playing dress up because it was a fashion event. Lady Gaga does this all the time!
I don’t know much about model Paloma Elsesser, but I do know that I like this look for more than just the fact that it wasn’t black. I don’t know if I would have gone for those chunky open platforms but I do think there’s something to be said here for the way she plays with fashion.
There’s no Disney Channel star here. Wow! Dove Cameron looks stunning.
This look on actress Zazie Beetz is a bit all over the place, but I still like it.
I’ve always been a big fan of Proenza Schouler and love their color combinations and color blocking effect likler this dress on Carolyn Murphy.
Black Dresses at The CFDA Awards 2021
And now on to the black…there was just way too much of it. I’m not sure if attendees wanted to be formal or if black is back in style. But really, I think I expected just a wee bit more at such a fashion event.
