As we are starting to head into vacation season, I can almost smell the sea breeze. I’m very much looking forward to the opportunity to travel again, most notably to the beach. I know vacations are not always at the beach, but my perfect vacation, as well as a lot of people’s, involves enjoying a warm weather location, having an adventure and getting some Vitamin Sea. Summer is here, and what I want to do on my summer vacation is enjoy some R&R; as I feel like I’m in desperate need of some. So let’s explore some options that would work well for your summer vacation outfits.
Vacation Outfits for Women Over 40
Tops And Bottoms
What I love about vacation outfits is that they only border on real clothes. Most beach vacations require lightweight clothes, a couple of bathing suits, a few maxi dresses and some sandals. A good place to start is a pair of lightweight pants. I love linen for warmer climates and I try to bring lots of linen options with me when I vacation. I’d pick up a couple of pairs of these High Waisted Wide Leg Linen Pants from Old Navy. You can wear them with anything: a tank top, a bathing suit top or a more dressy option if you are going to dinner or an outing where you want to cover up a little more. Speaking of tank tops, stock up on a few of these Modern Tanks from the Gap or these Brightside Tanks from Madewell. They come in a ton of color options and if you have enough, no other tops may be needed for your vacation outfit.

Outerwear And Cover-ups
Even being in warm weather, I still like to have some sort of outerwear piece. Something lightweight and casual is perfect for a beach vacation. I have something similar to this a.n.a Twill Anorak and it runs the gambit on how versatile it is for your vacation outfits. Also, many of us over 40 like to have beach cover ups. If you asked me 10 years ago if I was comfortable walking around in just my bathing suit, then I would probably have said yes. However, these days, I want a little more subtlety in my beachwear. Something simple like this Twist-Front Cover up Dress is chic and perfect for your day at the beach or pool.
Bags And Shoes
Pairing accessories with your vacation outfit should be simple. All I’ve ever really needed was a good bag to hold my wallet, sunblock and phone. A tote, backpack or crossbody bag is probably the best option. I like a compact one line this Quilted Crossbody Bag by Marc Jacobs. If you like a backpack option, try this bold print backpack from Herschel Supply Co.
Finally, you are going to need some comfortable shoes for your vacation outfit. I live in sandals on my warm weather vacations. If you do as well, try some super comfortable sandals like these Karsea Ankle Sandals from Clarks. If you prefer sneakers, you can’t go wrong with these 574 Sneakers from New Balance.
Expert Style Tips
- Keep your clothes basic. I’ve always felt that the key to packing for vacation is to bring lots of options you can mix and match and are low maintenance. Something you can throw in the washing machine while away is ideal.
- But don’t forget your flare. Even though you need to keep your wardrobe simple, don’t forget your one showstopper piece. I like to bring one or two unique pieces to wear on that special night out. Something like the last night out or special dinner while on vacation is the perfect occasion for your show stopper piece.
- Accessorize! Just because your wardrobe is basic, doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Make your vacation outfits exciting by adding bright and bold accessories like large enamel bracelets or earrings, eclectic wooden pieces or chunky gold or silver selections. I love this Karine Sultan Alice Statement Necklace for your bathing suit or upscale maxi dress for an evening out.
- Enjoy! So many of us are safely out of the woods now and can travel again. Take advantage and have a great time! Whether you want to go glam or casual for your vacation outfits, just try and get out there and take one if you can. Let’s get excited about this summer!
