It’s been a scorcher out there so far this season. It feels like the summer heat hit us early this year and with the sweltering weather, the last thing I want to do is wear layers or any fabric heavier than a whisper. That’s why the light and airy summer floral dress is so perfect for this time of year. You can throw one on and instantly look like a cool, summer goddess just floating down the street in the unbearable heat. It requires little thought when coordinating your outfit for a day trip or event and basically accessorizes itself. What’s not to love?
The floral dress trend ran rampant on the spring 2018 runways. Smaller, floral prints and patterns rooted in bold, primary colors like yellow, blue, red, black and white were the clear winners. The sexy silhouettes of the dresses showcased details to accentuate any part of your body that you want to show off; be it a little shoulder with an off-the-shoulder style, a hint of leg with a high (or low!) slit, or a hint of a midriff with cutouts. This trend was represented across most designers from Valentino to Michael Kors and the look is easy to find with both high and low price points to suit everyone’s needs.
I truly believe the summer floral sun dress can be worn by anybody. The small print that is popular for this season acts as an amazing camouflage if you want to hide any perceived flaws. My favorite silhouette is a short sleeve or sleeveless midi-length option. As a woman 40 or over, you don’t want to go too short or it will look too juvenile (do you really want to re-live the baby doll dress trend of the 1990s?).
The way to make this trend sexy is to pick a feature that you want to flaunt and go for it. I like so show a little shoulder with a halter style like this Derek Lam 10 Crosby wrap dress. If you want to keep it simple, this Rag & Bone asymmetrical hemline dress is perfect to throw on for a day of shopping or a backyard barbecue. We still have more than 70 days left of summer, so you have plenty of time to beat the heat in your summer floral dress.
