How to Stay Cool In Linen Clothing For Women Over 40

If your weather has been anything like here in Chicago, you’ve been hit with 100-degree temperatures, and it hasn’t really let up. The thought of sitting in the sweltering heat is so unpleasant, let alone wearing anything that feels thick, unbreathable, or constricting in any way while being in said heat. I’ve pretty much reserved all my linen clothing for these sorts of days, and I highly recommend linen clothing for women over 40 or for anyone who needs to beat the heat.

Linen Clothing For Women

I love linen clothing, especially now that I’ve reached my 40s and want nothing more than to be comfortable in my day-to-day. Linen is a free-flowing, breezy, natural fabric that you don’t have to fuss over. Yes, it wrinkles easily, but that is expected. Besides, in the summertime, comfort is key. So, let’s take a look at some great and affordable linens options to keep cool in the summer heat.

Linen Dresses And Rompers

This is my favorite way to go for a scorching summer day. Putting on a linen dress or romper is easy and foolproof. There are so many options that I easily found out there, so the pickings are not slim. If rompers are for you, try this No Plans Romper from Free People. I love the papaya color, as it would look beautiful on tanned or olive skin on a sweltering day. If bright colors aren’t for you, they have white and a seafoam green color to choose from as well.

If you prefer dresses, you can try this Linen Midi Dress from Banana Republic. It’s perfect for a summer outing, garden party or even a casual wedding. I also love the rich color options for this dress, and the skinny straps and deep V-neck definitely adds some sexiness. If you want something a little more casual, you can go with this Linen Workwear Dress from Everlane. This dress is perfect for lounging around, a casual hangout, or even to wear to work with some simple leather sandals.

Linen Tops and Bottoms

If you prefer separates, I’ve also got you covered. I always love a simple wide-leg linen pant, but I recently found these linen joggers from Athleta. They are a different take on linen pants, and I really like the silhouette! The sportier look works great for the summertime, all you need is a tank top and a pair of sneakers to finish the look. If you are looking for a dressier option for the office or to an event, this linen skirt from Mango is perfect. What’s not to love about this skirt? The rich blue color is universally flattering and the knotted detail on the waist and wrap front gives it some dimension. Also, the price can’t be beat for a 100% linen piece.

To top it all off, choose a linen top that suits your body type and style. There is something for everyone out there in any color or silhouette you want. I prefer something in a bold color, like a rich yellow or bright pink, but if you want something more subdued, you can go for this short sleeved linen top from LL Bean. I like the tie detail in the front and the striped pattern, which both adds some interesting visuals.

Matching Sets In Linen

As much as I love to create a great look from scratch, sometimes time and circumstances don’t allow for that. That’s why it’s great to have at least one or two matching sets ready to go in your closet. This is a wonderful time of year to bust out one of these sets, especially when temps are on the rise. I found this linen blend two piece set from Express Marketplace. I love the color and that both pieces are well constructed enough that you can also wear them as separates. If shorts aren’t for you, don’t worry, you can find two-piece sets with pants, skirts and a vast array of top options that will fit perfectly with your own personal style.

Expert Style Tips

  1. Try a matching set. Nab a matching set and you’re good to go. It’s a one stop shop for a complete and cohesive outfit. Just add some great jewelry and a comfortable (or sexy) shoe. Bonus points if you can find something in a bold or saturated color, which gives you the perfect pop of color for the summer.
  2. 100% linen is ideal. Yes, you want to go 100% linen if you can, but it can get pricey. So, finding a nice linen blend is OK as well. I’ve found some really nice linen pieces at Old Navy, both 100% and blended. Banana Republic is also a great shopping destination for a beautiful linen piece.
  3. Care is key. If you are going to invest in some linen pieces, you want to make sure you keep them well cared for. Most linen can be washed in the washing machine, as it’s very durable. However, I like to put linen pieces in a separate mesh bag and wash it with like colors. I also air dry all of my linen to avoid shrinkage. Make sure to pay attention to the care instructions on your pieces.
