How To Wear Summer Tops for Women Over 50

Summer is here and it’s finally time to break out your summer clothes. And one of the best ways to update your summer wardrobe is with a new summer top. Yet many women over 50 don’t get too excited about dressing for warm weather, because we all have parts of our bodies we really don’t want to show off anymore. But don’t fret, because there are many looks you can wear that will make you feel (and look) cool and comfortable … and even a little sexy. Here are some of the best styles and ways to wear summer tops for women over 50.

It’s time to bare your shoulders. But, to clarify, we don’t like cold shoulder tops! Lauren was asked about wearing them recently and it is a good question. Many women are comfortable showing off their shoulders, but may not be thrilled about their arms or midsection. The cold shoulder top seems to be the answer to that question, but when you wear one it also makes it obvious that you are trying to hide something. We never liked the look for that reason, then tacky versions crept up in stores (everywhere!) and now the cold shoulder top looks totally dated.

However, we do understand the need to cover up your arms! This holds true if you feel your arms are too big, have dimpled or sagging skin, or if you are slim and have knobby elbows. You are not alone, we all have our personal issues. On top of that, our skin may not be as pretty as it was in the past, to put it mildly. My skin is very dry and shows a lot of wrinkles, so even though my arms are in pretty good shape, I now prefer to wear long sleeves.

Off The Shoulder Tops

So what is the solution? Off the shoulder, or slightly off the shoulder tops may be the answer for you! With off the shoulder tops you need to wear a good strapless bra. This is necessary for both large chested women for support and small chested women who need a little padding. A strapless bra may prove to be another issue you want to avoid, so that case you may find a peasant blouse that sits on your shoulders, but still shows a lot of neckline.

The Sweetheart Neckline Top

A sweetheart neckline is another option to give you a cool summer look, with the bonus that it will stay in place.

One Shoulder Tops

If you like a little drama, try a one-shoulder look. At least one of your arms will be covered! All kidding aside, the asymmetrical look along with the diagonal neckline is slimming. Wear a convertible bra with one shoulder strap under it, and you’ll feel completely comfortable, and very fashionable!

High Neck Halter Tops

Even if your arms are not your favorite feature, sleeveless halter styles draw the eye up to your face, so you will be the focal point. A halter top with a high neck and a back is a wonderful option. Again, you will need to wear a strapless bra, but in some cases a crisscross or halter strap will work with this style. This top hides the neckline, but still shows off the tops of your shoulders, and draws attention away from your arms.

Take the plunge  – on the back of your top. A V-back top is a sleek and modern way to show a little extra skin in summer.

Tips When Shopping for Summer Tops:

  1. Choose loose fitting fabrics, like woven cotton, or jersey (t-shirt fabric). Size up if necessary to keep your top from clinging and to stay cool.
  2. Solid colors are safe bets, but also look for tops with camouflaging floral prints, ruffles, textures or interesting trims. Sometimes it’s one of these details that gets the all the attention and makes that extra-chic difference!
  3. Don’t worry too much about the features you want to hide. Instead accentuate the parts that you would like to show off!
  4. If you feel confident and comfortable in your summer top, no one will notice a little bulge or a few wrinkles. Confidence is your best accessory!
