It is not unusual for us to see Natalie Portman sporting menswear-inspired fashion, and she wears it well! We especially like how she styled this houndstooth oversized blazer. The petite (she is only 5′ 3″ tall) Portman wore the jacket slung over her shoulders yet it did not diminish her size nor her presence. In fact, the jacket gave the gorgeous actress even more celebrity star power, in a very chic and casual way. The jacket looks so cozy on her shoulders, whether she is seated or standing! She posted this photo on her Instagram in January 2020 and even though she wore it last year, the menswear look is still going strong.
Natalie Portman Oversized Blazer
I love how she paired this sharp shouldered jacket with charcoal grey menswear pants and (every woman’s favorite) a black turtleneck. Black pants would be expected and a bit too severe with this look. (And perhaps she realized she just might look too much like Audrey Hepburn in all black in case she had to remove the jacket.) Natalie also kept this look feminine with barely-there strappy sandals. I know I could not wear them, so I will give you another footwear option. I also understand we can’t all spend thousands of dollars on clothing, so I found a way for you to get this Natalie Portman look for less.

The Houndstooth Blazer
This menswear jacket from ASOS has the same oversize proportions as Natalie’s, only this Stradivarius Boyfriend Blazer in Houndstooth is only $60. See? You can get Natalie’s look for a lot less. With a bolder pattern this Vila Houndstooth Oversized Blazer from ASOS is only $103, and has similar black double breasted buttons like Natalie Portman’s jacket. You might like a warmer wool blend version like this Houndstooth Single Breasted Blazer from Topshop for $150.
Natalie Portman Look for Less Charcoal Grey Trousers
You can get menswear styling with a lot of comfort for little cash with these Vince Camuto Slim Leg Tech Ponte Ankle Pants. They have stretch fabric and are now on sale at Nordstrom for $53.40. This pair of Ann Taylor The Ankle Pants in Bi-Stretch are a perfect pair of menswear-inspired trouser for $109. You will wear them with this outfit and time and time again.
The Proverbial Black Turtleneck
Who doesn’t love and can use a simple black turtleneck? This Wild Fable™ Long Sleeve Turtleneck Rib-Knit T-Shirt from Target is only $16! It is thinner than a sweater so it will lay nicely under your jacket.
The Barely There Strappy Sandal
Natalie Portman adds a twist to her menswear look with feminine thin strap heel sandals. These Sam Edelman ’Patti’ Ankle Strap Sandals are a dead-ringer and now on sale for only $59.
The Strappy Alternative Shoe
I love the strappy sandals but if you don’t have pretty feet or don’t want to wear sandals in the winter there is an alternative. Wear a thin strap slingback pump like these Allegra James Celine Pointed Toe Slingback Pumps. These shoes were $169.95 but now you can get them for $101.96. A classic pump always works to add a feminine side to a menswear look.
Menswear-Inspired Fashion Styling Tips
1. All women can wear menswear looks.
Take it from Natalie Portman, who is only 5’3″. Women of all shapes and sizes can carry off an oversized menswear jacket. If it looks a bit overbearing, wear it over your shoulders like Natalie, almost like a cape.
2. Mix up your menswear patterns.
Natalie is wearing heathered grey trousers with her black and white houndstooth jacket to give it more interest. She could also have worn another soft plaid or herringbone menswear fabric with the blazer too. Black and white houndstooth is one of those patterns that goes with practically anything. So you can experiment with other patterns even in bright colors colors like florals or paisley print pants.
3. Add a feminine element to menswear.
This is the fun part of styling. Always go for the unexpected or opposite with one element to add interest to your look. This is what fashion designers do all the time. So when it comes to menswear looks, add a girly touch like Natalie Portman did with her strappy sandals. You can add a string of pearls, huge crystal chandelier earrings, a thin floral scarf, lace booties, or a bracelet with a soft ribbon or a bow. Get creative and see what feminine piece you can add to a menswear look to make it your own.
