Do You Have Adrenal Fatigue? Try This Adrenal Recovery Soup

You may be wondering, “What is adrenal fatigue?” and why you should even care. I get it. Until about 6 months ago I had never heard of it myself. But I suffer from it. You very possibly have some adrenal fatigue too and this healthy adrenal fatigue recovery soup recipe may help you.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

According to The Mayo Clinic, it’s a term applied to “a collection of nonspecific symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, nervousness, sleep disturbances and digestive problems.” The term may appear in popular health books and on alternative medicine websites, but it isn’t an accepted medical diagnosis. Well that’s because most doctors don’t know to look for it or how to test for it and sadly modern medicine doesn’t recognize it. None of the standard lab tests typically used by most doctors are designed to detect adrenal fatigue in varying degrees of severity. You need saliva hormone testing to get accurate results.

I recently saw a recommended functional medicine doctor because I was feeling generally crappy. Last June I had spinal surgery and as much as I had recovered physically and my pain has substantially diminished, I was feeling foggy, moody, restless and just off. Quite possibly it was my hormones, but the timing was right after my surgery so I thought there might be more to it. It turns out there was. Yes, my hormones are shot, but so are my adrenals.

Caused by Stress

Adrenal fatigue is usually caused by some form of stress. This stress can be physical, emotional, psychological, environmental, infectious or a combination of the mentioned. However, your adrenals respond to every kind of stress the exact same way. If these stresses happen simultaneously or become chronic the adrenals have no opportunity to recover and the result is adrenal fatigue. Needless to say I have been under tremendous stress lately and it has taken a toll on my heath.

I am going to uncover much more about adrenal fatigue on my podcast Beauty is a Bitch! when my co-host and I interview functional medicine practitioner Dr. Anita Sadaty. So stay tuned. In the meantime I strongly urge you to read the book Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome by James L. Wilson. In a nutshell however, you can recover through diet, supplements and relaxation techniques. Who wouldn’t want more energy, a stronger immune system, vitality and the ability to enjoy life? We are too stressed out. But trust me, adrenal fatigue is a real thing.

Adrenal Fatigue Recovery Soup

This soup recipe is from the book Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome by James L. Wilson. Actually the recipe is originally from Dolores S. Downey’s “Balancing body chemistry with nutrition seminars” which Dr. Wilson shares because it has proven helpful in restoring adrenal function during the active, chronic and recovery phase of adrenal failure. It’s called “Taz” (I’m not sure why) and I made a couple of tweaks to make it taste even better. It’s actually delicious and quite filling. Not to mention it’s low-cal, packed with vitamins and healthy. After the crazy holidays or times of stress, this is a welcome diet balancing soup and it’s simple to make.

adrenal fatigue soup recipe ingredients vegetables fountainof30

Ingredients

16 oz. green beans

1 cup chopped celery

1 zucchini sliced

1 medium onion chopped

2 cloves garlic (I added this for flavor)

1 cup tomato juice

1 cup spring water (spring water is important since regular water could be causing toxicity)

2 tbsp. raw honey

1 tsp. Paprika

1 cup chicken bone broth (original recipe calls for chicken broth but bone broth is better for you)

Sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a pot and simmer for one hour until vegetables are tender.

Note: You can add cabbage if you like.

Also do not freeze this soup. The point is to make it fresh. Besides the vegetables get mushy when frozen and then thawed.
