The holidays are almost here, starting with Thanksgiving! I put together a festive party outfit that’s perfect for Thanksgiving but versatile enough for any holiday event on your calendar this season. This look is great for cocktail parties, office gatherings, holiday dinners with friends, or even New Year’s Eve.

Fall/Winter Holiday Outfit High and Low
Since I gave you so many ideas on opportunities to wear this look, you will definitely be able to reduce your cost-per-wear. That’s why you may decide to splurge on the high-end version of this look (on the left). Or you can save more if you go for the low-priced outfit on the right. And there is one more option! You can pick and choose pieces from both the high and low sides and create a high-low look.
Easy Outfit for Women Over 50
This easy-to-wear outfit is based on a pair of black velvet wide leg pants, a leopard print blouse, a gold handbag and black kitten heel booties. It is sort of dressy, yet casual too, so it is perfect for those occasions when you don’t know what to wear because it can go either way. Additionally this look is chic, sophisticated and comfortable, making it perfect for women over 50.
Black Velvet Pants
It may seem simple, but a pair of black velvet jeans or pants is what makes this outfit ideal for holiday parties. Starting with Thanksgiving, velvet pants with a wide leg give you a flattering fit and allow you to feel comfortable when you are enjoying the extra food you eat at holiday parties. These Veronica Beard Taylor Velvet High Waist Wide Leg Jeans are well worth the price of $298. If you already own a pair of Veronica Beard jeans, you know what I mean. The fit and timeless styling will keep them on rotation in your closet for years to come. However, you may prefer to spend your money on gifts right now, so you can pick up these Tahari ASL Velvet Wide Leg Pants on sale for $53.99! These pants have 5% elastin, so they are even more comfortable, but a little less stylish than the Veronica Beard jeans.
A Leopard Print Blouse
Any print or even a solid shiny blouse will work with black velvet pants. But leopard prints are back for Fall 2024 in a big way (once again)! This amazing and dramatic Alice + Olivia Ilan Leopard Print Long Sleeve Shirt is a bit of an investment at $395, yet you will wear this piece all year long. Or you can get a lot more bang for your buck with this AllSaints Oana Print Button-Up Shirt, now only $161.
Gold Detail Black Belt
One thing that instantly adds polish and pulls together an outfit is a belt. Shiny black croc-embossed leather adds a rich and textural contrast with velvet. The gold metal logo detail on this Tom Ford Double T Croc Embossed Calfskin Leather Belt for $990 is beyond chic. Designer belt collectors (Lauren) take note! But you can find plenty of less expensive belts that look similar (at a great distance) like this Nordstrom Metal Keeper Belt for only $39.
Black Kitten Heel Booties
If you don’t already own a pair of black kitten heel booties, I suggest you pick up a pair! Classic pointy 2 inch heel booties in black like these Neous Rami 50MM Leather Kitten-Heel Ankle Boots for $995 (now on sale for $597) are absolute perfection. You will wear them with this outfit as well as everything in your closet from faded jeans to skirts, dresses and even some gowns. But you can also get a pair of these Calvin Klein Gentley Pointed Cap Toe Bootie for a fraction of the cost at $169, or now for $101.40 for a limited time!
Gleaming Gold Metallic Handbag
Go for the gold! You can make a statement and add instant holiday glam to your look with a shiny gold metallic bag. This Bottega Veneta Mini Cassette Metallic Intrecciato Padded Metallic Leather Shoulder Bag for $3,500 is one to cherish for years to come. But you can get similar gleaming gold shine with this Schrille Woven Crossbody Bag for only $8.98 from Amazon.
Versatile Holiday Outfit Styling Tips
- Style and Comfort. You can have both! Find pieces with stretch in the fabric (like our velvet pants) so you will be able to eat that extra piece of pie.
- Lush Fabrics. Velvet pants, a shiny blouse, and a metallic handbag add an element of festivity to your outfit.
- Not Just For Holidays Colors. Neutral colors like gold, silver or winter white, or dark colors such as burgundy, violet, or pine green will work from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day. Bright red may scream Christmas and you may not wear it as much (unless red is your jam).
- Versatility. Choose pieces you know you can wear again. Will you wear a dress as much as a pair of velvet jeans? Probably not, especially when it gets cold outside! Before making a purchase for a holiday outfit, think about if you will wear it again after the parties are over.
