There are now all kinds of hair care products and vitamins that claim to help hair grow. How about offering one product that makes hair stop growing – especially for those of us who have to color our hair? I have a standing appointment with my colorist every 6 weeks, but by week 4 my roots are already showing and it drives me batty. It’s not just the grays either, but that definitive line you can see from the color and the regrowth. Well thank GOD for spray root concealers! They buy you another two weeks in-between appointments so I always make sure to have some on hand. Concealer sprays have come a long way too. I have tried different formulations and prefer the spray on kind over ones you have to strategically apply by hand (like powders).
A few years ago I discovered Rita Hazan’s Root Concealer Touch-Up Spray which changed my life. I could only get it Sephora and I was hooked like a drug addict. In fact, I’ve gotten several friends equally obsessed. You just aim the small spray can bottle at your roots on your part from 4-6 inches away and voila, you have no more roots. It’s that easy and foolproof.
Now don’t go thinking you can use this product instead of hair color, it doesn’t work that way. It just buys you a little time in case you can’t get to the salon right away. Besides, what’s better than freshly colored hair? NOTHING! Now there is no excuse for anyone seeing that telltale half inch of regrowth that screams “it’s time to get to the salon.”
It took a little while but now there are several other beauty brands offering root concealer sprays such as L’Oreal’s that you can find at the drugstore. Here are 9 root concealer sprays currently available. Keep in mind they all work basically the same way.
This is the first brand I tried and it’s still a favorite. This water-proof, transfer-proof spray formula features a pinpoint actuator to cover grays exactly where you need it. Rita’s custom blended dyes are buildable to work on every hair color. It’s available in 5 shades and is ammonia and peroxide free.
2. Style Edit 2-ounce Blonde Conceal Spray, $10.39
The unique pinpoint applicator targets the grey area with precision leaving no mess. It’s paraben, sulfate and peroxide free.
This one comes in 8 shades.
AGEbeautiful Root Touch-Up Sprays Temporary Haircolor is water, sweat and stain resistant and lasts until your next shampoo. This one also delicately covers thinning patches (like GLH – remember that Ronco product for men?) so hair looks naturally full and beautiful. It comes in 8 shades and easily blends with any hair color.
It’s about time! I would expect something this good from L’Oreal. This new temporary spray conceals grays in seconds for flawless roots. The coverage is seamless, the formula is lightweight and there is no smudging or sticky residue when it dries. It’s also ammonia and peroxide free.
This light spray camouflages gray in 10 seconds and dries instantly. It easily washes off with shampoo.
7. Ever Pro Gray Away Temporary Root Concealer, $10.99
This one only comes in 3 colors and you have to let it dry for 2-3 minutes.
Instantly cover grays and roots or you can use it to revive highlights. Microfine pigments deliver airbrush coverage seamlessly when and where you need it most. The quick drying powder formula absorbs dirt and oil and the sleek, container is small enough to tuck away in your handbag.
9. EVERPRO® Back2Blonde Hair Color, $10.99
This is another new favorite and it’s for blondes only! I’m technically a blonde now apparently. It’s a little more like a spray can bottle (you have to shake it really well), but the color blends perfectly with my regrowth. It only comes in 3 variations but they cover 9 shades of blonde. Prismatech pigments self-adjust to match and blend visible dark roots and natural emollients give hair a healthy shine and natural feel. The quick-dry formula dries in seconds and washes out easily with shampoo.
Disclosure: I tested some, but not all of the products above. I paid for some and others were given to me to test. Opinions are always my own.
