As the spotlight falls on the 81st Venice International Film Festival, fashion and film intertwine on the glamorous stage of Venice Lido, from August 28 to September 7, 2024. This prestigious event, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, showcases cinematic brilliance, and also sets the scene for breathtaking fashion moments reminiscent of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Let’s take a look at the best fashion at the Venice Film Festival 2024.
Best Fashion At The Venice Film Festival 2024
The event kicked off with Tim Burton’s visually striking Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on August 28, marking a spectacular return for of “black is back” fashion, worn by Winona Ryder, and her co-star Catherine O’Hara. Catherine had an embellishment moment, as did Cate Blanchett as did Angelina Jolie, who captivated us with her faux fur stole.

Catherine O’Hara in Oscar de la Renta
I’ve never seen anything like this from Oscar de la Renta! Catherine O’Hara‘s leather column dress was very Beetlejuice and very Moira-coded, according to InStyle magazine. It was also quite intricate, from the open shoulders to the accented hips and floral appliques. We love a good accent or four and I’d say she’s really outdone herself this time. This is what you call taking on a theme and doing it well.
Nicole Kidman in Schiaparelli
Nicole Kidman can (almost never) get it wrong and this is just another example of one of her dashing looks. She wears a V-neck organza, flesh-colored corset bustier with a unique bodice and black sequins, fringe and a black velvet skirt from Schiaparelli.
I had to show you a different photo of the dress from another angle, because everything is so detailed and structured that it really becomes a work of art. I think this may be one of my favorite looks ever on Nicole Kidman.
Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton
We all know Cate Blanchett is a tried and true fashionista, who knows how to pull off a truly chic look. This Louis Vuitton gown is no exception. The embroidered silk and tulle cape is the highlight of the dress, and it definitely sets her apart from the crowd. But that’s nothing new for this A-lister, who knows how to take a risk and look good doing it.
P.S. This was worn BEFORE Labor Day.
Glenn Close in Oscar de la Renta
Well, I can’t quite say Glenn Close is on my Best Dressed list, but I like she took a risk with this gold Oscar de la Renta coat, featuring some of the same floral applique worn by Catherine O’Hara. Unfortunately, I wish the coat was a little more streamlined. Still, if you can’t experiment with fashion at 77-years old, when can you experiment?
Angelina Jolie in Tamara Ralph
Unfortunately more people spoke about the veins protruding from Angelina Jolie‘s arms than they did about the beautiful silhouette of this gown. Although I’m not a huge fan of the muted color, I still think this dress pretty much screams Angelina. Elegant, neutral, but still has something about it that is different from what she’s worn before – like that emerald green number she wore back at the Golden Globe Awards in 2011. Granted, it was not neutral, but for me it also suited Angelina as does this dress.
The draped Tamara Ralph chiffon dress in beige stands out for its faux-fur stole but Angelina also pinned a gold rose-shaped brooch by Cartier, which was reported to once belong to Greek opera singer Maria Callas, the woman she plays in her new movie.
Amal Clooney in Bach Mai
Amal Clooney‘s fashion seems to be getting better with age. What I like about her style is she’s all about old Hollywood glamour – a captivating silhouette, timeless elegance, and streamlined design. But she always throws in something contemporary, usually with color. This Bach Mai gown worn by Amal a the Cartier party, does not disappoint.
Amal is wearing a standout gown inspired by Bach Mai’s Resort 2023 collection, with a napa lamb bodice and ombre paillete fringe that moves from stone to aqua to purple. I’ve never seen anything like it, and now I’ll be looking out for this designer (and hopefully for Amal in another one of his designs).
