The stores are stocked with new shoes for fall! But most of us, especially if you are a woman over 50, no longer follow the trends, and feel like we have enough pairs in our closets. Yet, I think it’s still fun to look at the Fall 2023 shoe trends from the runway. After all, If you need a new pair of shoes you may want to know what is new… or what is new again! If you have collected or kept some of your shoes or boots you just may find you can wear them again for fall 2023 (ie: over the knee boots).
Fall 2023 Shoe Trends for Women Over 50
Footwear for runway collections can be rather over-the-top. But I found the best Fall 2023 shoe trends you can wear in real life (IRL). The real way is generally a lower heel (so you can actually walk in the shoes without teetering or falling), as well as a lower price, so you can actually buy a pair!
Here are 6 of the best Fall 2023 shoe trends and how you can find a modified pair you will actually wear!

1. Knife Sharp Pointy Toe Pumps
Super high heel killer pumps are back in style for fall 2023. They were shown on the runways at Prada, Ferragmo, Saint Laurent, Valentino and Givenechy, to name a few.
Maybe you already own a pair, or need some new pointy toe pumps because they have become difficult to wear (too tight and too high!). After all, women over 50 want to be comfortable! So I choose to look at these gorgeous Tom Ford pumps in croc embossed blue leather, but prefer to wear a pair of low 2” heel point toe pumps like these from Franco Sarto in soft blue suede.
Fit tip: Go up one half size with pointy toe shoes for a little extra room in the front, but not so big they slip off in the back.
2. Slouchy Over-The-Knee Boots
Oh yes, they’re baaack, and in a big way. Over-the-knee boots hit the runways in a variety of neutral and bold colors and styles from sock boots to slouchier hip-wading styles. They were spotted at Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, Elie Saab, Isabel Marant, Dion Lee, Jonathon Simkhai, Khaite, Michael Kors, Veronica Beard and others for fall 2023. The trend this season is wider and sloucher, but this can be difficult to style, especially if you are wearing them under longer skirts and dresses. And they are not so easy to wear because the added volume is not so manageable when you sit down.
You may not want a pair of super high and wide over the knee boots like these from Bottega Veneta, not to mention that white is not practical the second it rains. So I found these stretchy Charles by Charles David over the knee boots in taupe with a lower, 2 3/4″ heel and much lower price to boot. (Yep, pun!)
3. Bows On Your Toes
Bows are a trend for fall 2023 apparel and many designers showed bows on shoes. Super overszed floor-grazing bows were shown at Balmain and Loewe, with other versions from modern to dainty at Gucci, Prada, Giambattista Valli, Versace and Vivienne Westwood.
These Ferragamo Emii buckle bow satin pumps are so divine, but the heel and the bow are a bit extreme. An easier to wear pair at a less extreme price are these kate spade new york bow pointed toe slingbacks.
4. Mighty Modern Mules
I am personally fond of mules because they are easy to wear and are usually comfortable. Mules are a great way to segue from summer to fall, when you no longer want to wear sandals, but aren’t ready to close up your feet in pumps or boot. The mules for fall 2023 were tall and mighty at JW Anderson, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Ferragamo and Miu Miu.
The curved heel and silhouette of these point-toe Bottega Veneta Tokyo calfskin mules are amazing, but the heel is too high for most women over 50. These cool and equally modern André Assous Featherweight wedge mules are more my speed!
5. Sculptural Curvy Wedges
Wonderful to look at, but not so practical to wear are the 4″ plus high sculptural curvy wedges that were shown at Ferragamo, Bottega Veneta, Missoni, Khaite and other fall 2023 runways.
This Botegga Veneta pair is a work of art and best left for viewing, but you can take them down a notch (a half inch which makes a difference) and actually feel comfortable in these SARTO by Franco Sarto square toe wedge pumps.
6. Furry Feet
This last trend is really out-there, but doesn’t it look cozy? Furry shoes walked the runways at Khaite, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga in various degrees of hairiness.
I wouldn’t go full on teddy bear like these high heel pumps from Stella McCartney because they are a bit like wearing stuffed toys on your feet, and also will make them look bigger. However, these faux shearling Yosi Samra scuffs can be a fun way to sport the furry trend with very little investment. (They come in black, too.)
