Closet Staples Update For Women Over 50 For The New Year

Here we are, the start of another new year. We all know it’s a time for new beginnings. Getting in shape, clearing the clutter (both mentally and physically), finding a new job or working on our relationships are just some of the things people vow to do when a new year begins. What some of us may not do, which can also be important, is to catalog our closet. Its time for a closet staples update.

Closet Staples Update for 2023

This is a wonderful time of year to evaluate your style, because if you look good you feel good; and who doesn’t want to feel good at the dawn of a new year? We all have those tried-and-true closet staples that we’ve loved for years and years, but sometimes, they deserve a revamp as well. Let’s say out with the old and in with the new and find some updated closet staples.

Closet Staple Tops

The wonderful thing about staples is they are perfect for all ages, especially women over 50. You can spend as little or as much on them as you want, depending on your budget, and you can add any spin on them you desire. But either way, if you’ve had yours for some time, it’s time for a refresh. I think the best start to revamping your closet staples is with a simple, crisp button front shirt. I prefer a loose fitting shirt like this option from Amazon. It’s easy to style with literally anything. If you want to try a more modern spin on the button front, you can go one or two sizes up for an ultra-oversized look. Pair this with some wide leg pants and sneakers for a comfy casual look.

Let’s continue to talk tops. We don’t want to forget the classic crew neck sweater. You can base an entire wardrobe around quality colors and styles. When thinking about a crew neck sweater as a staple, I always think cashmere is the way to go. Contrary to popular belief, cashmere doesn’t have to break the bank. I found this 100% cashmere option at Macy’s. With the $47.99 sale price tag, you can pick up several colors (bright and neutral) and have one be the  highlight of your outfit.

Closet Staple Bottoms

I’ve been in search of a quality but casual pair of wide leg pants that I can wear anywhere. After some looking, I found this pair from Mason. They come in a wide selection of colors, and I must say, I’ve been loving pleats in a pair of trousers. You can wear these with anything…an old concert tee and a leather jacket or a silk off-the-shoulder blouse for work or an evening out. The price is a little on the higher side, but the variety of options you have with these makes them well worth the price.

Closet Staple Shoes

I’m definitely the ultimate shoe gal, and I fall victim to getting a lot of trendy and over-the-top shoe styles and not focusing on the basics. But after a little searching, I found a couple of closet staples that I will definitely be picking up in the new year. These Franco Sarto Lug Sole Loafers are super fun with the patent leather and tassel details. I especially love the navy color, but if you are basic black lover, that is also available.

You also want to make sure to pick up a pair of boots. Now that comfort has become king for most (especially women over 50), I recommend a pair of well-crafted riding boots like these Sam Edelman Drina boots. They are stream-lined and sleek and will literally go with everything. They come in a rich brown, a beautiful cognac, a basic black as well as a dual tone, so take your pick. The leather upper will wear well over time, so you will have these for years to come.

Outerwear

The first thing that comes to mind when I think staple outwear is a classic camel coat. This style is truly timeless and you can have it for decades and it never ages or goes out of the style. But why not try to find a nice refresh for this year? I found this double-breasted option, military style option. I love the details that make it special and a little unexpected.

If you want to go more traditional, you can do this option from Banana Republic. The clean lines and simple oversized lapel are the epitome of classic style. This is coat is never a wrong choice and the price point is pretty great at only $200. You don’t have to sacrifice quality for cost.

Closet Staples Update Style Tips

  1. Try to go high low. It’s understandable if you are not able to splurge on every staple piece. So pick and choose what you want to truly invest in, and then go mid-tier pricing for the remaining pieces. You can find options in all price points, but keep in mind, the point of a  closet staple is to wear it repeatedly, so it needs to be able to sustain wear and tear.
  2. It’s OK to stray. Similar to my loafer example above, it’s OK of you want to go with a slightly unexpected color. Choosing a navy blue over black or a hunter green over a classic tan will still give you great style results. And it’s a wonderful way to tailor your staples to your personal style.
  3. It’s OK to indulge. I know the intention of a closet staple is to wear it over and over again. However, it’s OK to have more than one of a certain staple. If you see two different camel coats that each have details that make your heart sing, by all means, bring home both! It’s perfectly acceptable to have certain staples that you switch out depending on your mood.
