Summer is winding down and the only thing that makes me happy about that is fall fashion! As I age I notice I wear more “uniforms.” I tend to put together one outfit that works and then wear it over (and over) again! I try to wear it around different groups of people who have not seen it before. Having a tried and true look that you can wear at a moment’s notice makes life easier. Here is my comfy and casual fall outfit for 2022.
I’m basing this outfit on a casual look from Loro Piana from this season now available on Net-a-Porter. First, the fresh sage green color and styling of these jeans caught my eye for fall 2022. They will brighten up a dreary day and are a little dressier than blue denim jeans. Second, the ease of throwing on an oversized chunky knit sweater with macramé trim is very appealing! There’s no need to fuss with belts or even a jacket when you wear a big sweater like this one. To top the look off, black lug sole boots are a must-have for getting around this season. And a medium size tote bag completes the look.
However, the Loro Piana sweater and jeans outfit totals over $7,000! But don’t worry, I also found a low-price version of this fall outfit. Here’s how to style and shop this fall outfit high or low.

Casual Fall Outfit High and Low
The Chunky Knit Turtleneck Sweater
An ivory or cream colored chunky turtleneck sweater is a classic and one you will wear year after year. This gorgeous Loro Piana Fringed Macramé-trimmed Cashmere Sweater is $4,075. It’s a luxurious runway piece with interesting detailing in soft cashmere. However, one may not even know it is that high priced! So instead you can pick up this Toccin Chunky Turtleneck Sweater on sale now for $99.97.
The Sage Green Denim Jeans
A pair of leafy green jeans are a wonderful alternative to blue denim. The styling of these Loro Piana High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans are perfection! But that perfection will set you back $750, so I found these Ted Baker Rinalda Straight Leg Jeans in green, which are now only $87.
The Lug Sole Chelsea Boot
If you are a shoe collector, these totally amazing Rene Caovilla Calfskin Snake-Wrap Chelsea Boots for $1,630 are a must for the fall 2022 season. Yes, they are a huge investment, but they are like no other with the sparkly wrap-around snake at the ankle and the sole. For a simpler and less exciting look (with a much lower price), these Steve Madden Hesitant Chelsea Boots will work for only $139.95.
The Small Ruched Tote
If you need a roomy and soft handbag without a lot of hardware, this Proenza Schouler Small Ruched Leather Crossbody Tote for $895 is ideal! It is available in other colors, but you can’t go wrong with black. If that is not in your budget, this Scoop Women’s Slouchy Shoulder Bag is now only $16.50! Heck, get both!
Tips for Styling This Casual Fall Outfit
1. Find an oversized sweater that is not too bulky and one that will keep its shape. You will need to try it on to see how long it is as well. Just over the hips is usually the most flattering, but every body is different and you may need to wear your sweater longer or shorter.
2. Lug sole boots are the rage, but be aware that they will trap the snow (and bring it onto your house) in winter. Ankle high Chelsea boots will work but I recommend mid-height boots to avoid your pants getting stuck in the boots!
3. Especially when you are over 50, a one-and-done “uniform” is the way to go. If you like the oversized sweater with colored jeans look, then get it in several colors. Imagine how different this outfit will look, for example, with a charcoal grey sweater and red jeans.
