If you work in an office, sometimes it’s difficult to put together outfits that are professional yet still comfortable and chic. I believe it is best to come up with a basic “uniform” that can be mixed, matched and changed up easily. So I put together this look that is ideal for warm weather and can transition easily into fall. Lately my favorite work outfit is an oversized blazer, tee-shirt, wide leg pants, slide loafers and a large tote bag. It looks chic and casual, yet pulled together for women over 50. You can go all high-end or get the look for less. Here’s how to style a comfortable and chic work outfit high or low.
Comfortable and Chic Work Outfit High or Low
A blazer gives you a bit of authority and keeps you warm in air conditioning or any change of the weather. But wearing a playful plaid jacket keeps you from looking too stuffy. A comfortable pair of wide leg pants works perfectly with the jacket and wearing a t-shirt underneath further dresses down the look. Sandals are fine for some offices, but I like closed-toe shoes for work under any circumstance, so slipping into a pair of loafer mules strikes a perfect balance. And don’t forget your sleek oversized tote bag! You will need it for your laptop or iPad and to stash your jacket when the weather or the office gets warm.

The Plaid Blazer
This gorgeous plaid lightweight wool blazer from A.L.C. is both beautiful and versatile. The double button gold button detailing and impeccable tailoring make it worth the price of $650. You can get it now through July 31st for $435.99 at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, but for an even better price this Topshop plaid suit jacket will give you a similar look for a lot less. It costs $121 but you can get it this week for $79.99.
The Wide Leg Trousers
You can always wear jeans with a plaid jacket, but for the office a pair of wide leg pants takes this outfit up a notch. Bring it way up with these silk Max Mara trousers for $725, or get them for practically 1/10th of the price with these Mango pleat front wide leg pants for only $79.99.
The Classic White T-Shirt
A basic white t-shirt will not only add to your comfort, but will add casual style to this work outfit. The Row makes this perfect cotton jersey t-shirt, but it will set you back $320. Madewell’s Vintage tee in white will work just as well with this work outfit, and it is only $18.50. It may not keep its shape the same way as The Row tee, but for the price you can toss it out and get a new one every year!
I adore closed toe mules and I am pleased to see the trend is here to stay. A flat loafer mule in black will be a totally worthwhile investment since they never go out of style. Mules are easy to walk in for your commute, and your feet will be happy all day long at the office. These Tod’s mules for $775 have a stunning oversized chain embellishment. They are a must-have for shoe collectors, but you can find similar silhouettes for a lower price. For example, these Linea Paolo loafer mules are only $119.95, sans the cool gold chain.
The Croc Embossed Tote
Add a little texture to your work outfit with a croc embossed tote. This amazing embossed leather Christian Louboutin tote for $1,790 is sure to turn heads. You will smile every time you open it up and see the red lining. But if you want a little less attention and would like to spend a lot less cash, this Ted Baker mock croc tote bag is only $95.
Work Outfit Styling Tips
1. This outfit is an easy uniform. Swap out the pants for wide leg jeans, or try different a colored t-shirt or a solid blazer instead of a plaid.
2. Don’t invest in T-shirts. When it comes to t-shirts, especially white, there is no need to invest a lot of money in them. They become worn out, pitted and stained, so you may as well buy fresh new tees for under $20 and toss them at the end of the season.
3. Give your feet a break! Wear flats shoes to the office. If your feet hurt, you won’t be comfortable while you work. Besides, if you wear flat shoes there is no need to lug an extra pair of shoes with you. Now that we’re older, it’s best to work smarter, not harder!
