With everyone slowly getting out of lockdown mode and perhaps having gained the quarantine 15, this might not be the summer where we are all showing off in our favorite swimwear, shorts and little dresses (if that’s your thing). So what’s the alternative that’s still stylish and summery? Caftans and tunics (their shorter variation). It’s all about the caftan life for women over 40.
These relaxed pieces skim over the parts that you want to hide but allow you to strategically show off your legs with slits or cropped lengths, your decolletage and collarbones, and they are simply just fun to wear while still maintaining a certain elegance.
Caftan Life: Caftans and Tunics For Women Over 40
You might associate these styles with boho and hippie types – and for good reason – but we can assure you that there is a great caftan or tunic out there for everyone. Here are some of our favorites.

Basic Black Caftan
Think of it as the breezier cousin of the little black dress. A simple black caftan or tunic is easy to throw on for a (socially distant) walk or to run errands, or you could dress it up with jewelry and pretty flats or sandals. This caftan from H&M is just about ideal if you want to dip your toe in the caftan trend, and the price is right at only $29.99. Want something with just a little more definition? This Monki tie-waist caftan from ASOS is a great choice.
Try Tie-Dye
The tie-dye trend is still going strong, so why not embrace it with a caftan that is really more of an extended t-shirt, like this maxi from MakeMeChic via Amazon. Note: I actually own this one in yellow and black – it never wrinkles and it has pockets!
Summer Florals
Even though it’s summer we always love florals on a dark background, and this dress by Koh Koh from Amazon fits the bill perfectly with its drapey sleeves and adjustable high waistline.
Go Over The Top
Caftans have an inherent eccentric glamour to them so you might as well embrace it and channel your inner Talitha Getty with something like this Gosopin caftan available from Amazon. Perfect for adding something when you are lounging around your background, poolside, or just hanging out on your couch.
Crop It To Tunic Length
A shorter caftan or tunic is an ideal way to show off your legs (wear shorts underneath to protect yourself from giving people a show). This cotton-blend tunic from H&M comes in a deep blue and a golden yellow – we’re partial to the sunshine shade for summer if you can pull it off.
Prefer black? This Free People tunic from ASOS looks like it would be extra flattering and perfect with white shorts or pants. Or go for something more modern like this Marimekko X Uniqlo scallop print tunic – we love both the black/white and turquoise/green colorways.
Not loving any of the above options? Check out Etsy – there are dozens if not hundreds of sellers who offer hand-made caftans from around the world in many different styles at very affordable prices, and you can likely get exactly what you want custom-made.
How To Style Caftans and Tunics
How do you rock a caftan or tunic and not look like you are wearing a costume or are wrapped in a sheet? If the look you are going for is more ethnic-inspired or boho, then keep the rest of your look super clean and simple; on the other hand, if your caftan is simpler, feel free to stack on some bracelets and a long necklace or earrings. Either way, when it comes to footwear opt for flat sandals or espadrilles – nothing too fussy.
