Since I discovered last fall that I have developed allergies to at least a dozen chemicals (many of which are found in beauty products) I have had to literally change everything in my life. That includes not only what I put on my face and body. but what I use on my hair. Now I use organic shampoos and conditioners. Since I have color treated hair I have been using sulfate-free products for years but now I have to also cross reference that they don’t contain ingredients I will react to such as Mthylisothiaolinone, Diphenylguandine, Carba Mix, Iodine, Glutaraldehyde, Triclosan, Amalgum, Ethyleneglycol-dimethsacrylate, Methyl methacrylate, NA50, Thimerosal and Polysorbate 80.
After my allergy patch test my doctor gave me a list of “safe” products, but there was not much listed in the way of shampoos and conditioners so I had to read labels very carefully. Even some organic and vegan products can produce a reaction. I had to do a great deal of research and a lot of testing. Needless to say I have taken over the shower I share with my husband and he has been very patient with my ever expanding collection of shampoos and conditioners. Some I liked and some I did not. However, thankfully my eagle eye paid off and I did not have an adverse reaction to any I tested.
I also learned you can spend a fortune on hair products (and I do), but now there are also plenty of natural, organic, vegan and sensitive skin options that can be found at your local drugstore and Target for much less. So going au natural or clean when it comes to your hair will cost you whatever you chose to spend.
So without further ado here is my list of the best organic and sensitive skin shampoos and conditioners.
