The Best Dressed Celebrities of 2019: A Year of Crazy Color

Color has played a big role in my list of the best dressed celebrities of 2019. Every year, since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute has chosen a “Color of the Year.” Experts look at trends in all facets of daily life such as the entertainment industry emerging artists, fashion, tech and more to decide on a winner for the upcoming year.

This year, Pantone’s 2019 “Color of the Year” was the incredibly bright and lively, or as Mental Floss called it, “social and spirited” Living Coral. The color, which the website of shareable content also called “engaging in nature” and “lighthearted” certainly speaks to this year of bold, fun and vibrant color.

Hot pink, canary yellow, and electric blue made the rounds at many fashion weeks, particularly in New York this past September. Kooky “camp” was the name of the game at the Met Gala in May. And as diversity hit the red carpet, so did the bright-colored fashion from all parts of the world. This is including Asia, Africa, France, Russia and many more.

Here’s a look at four fashionistas who became style icons this year, thanks to their crazy and colorful choices.

Best Dressed Celebrities of 2019: Gemma Chan – Oscars 2019

Gemma Chan, who stands six feet tall, turns heads on the red carpet. In a recent article on her in Vogue, she said she’s used her press tour for Crazy, Rich Asians, and awards shows like the Oscars to “put a spotlight on Asian creativity.” In other words, she wears American and European designers with Asian heritages like Joseph Altuzarra and Prabal Gurung.

And while she doesn’t say no to UK designers like Stella McCartney and Mary Katrantzou, she wanted her fashion on the promotional tour of Crazy Rich Asians to send a message. “We wanted to reflect the values of the film,” she said, “We tried to design it in the spirit of diversity and inclusivity.”

For Chan, “diversity” and “inclusivity” seems to be bright patterns, neon palettes and jewel tones.

The masses were mesmerized by her Valentino looks at the Golden Globes (navy blue) and the Academy Awards (hot pink). The Oscars look was risky, but still ladylike, classy and modern. Oh, and effortless, of course. Because isn’t that what wearing color should be?

The pleats on this dress were everything, as was the neckline.

There were also, of course, Gemma’s other amazing statement-making outfits. The electric blue leather slacks balloon-style slacks paired with sharp blue heels and a yellow knit  was Altuzarra. And she wore a funky print retro suit from the Prada 2019 Resort Collection at the Spirit Awards.

Tracee Ellis Ross – Met Gala After Party

Tracee Ellis Ross is never one to play it safe at a party. She lives in color and her Instagram followers know it. She doesn’t shy away from a look that others might think is too much. Case in point, she wore a highlighter green suit with a snake encrusted snake on it to the Grammys. Tracee Ellis Ross told CNN, “I think fashion has evolved for me personally into a form of creative expression.”

The daughter of Diana Ross certainly knows how to oomph up her look. And she definitely isn’t afraid to wear color, or white, when the occasion calls for it. Who could forget that black and white poofy feathered dress at the 2019 50th NAACP Image Awards? Or those astonishing looks at the Fashion Awards? She wore a Richard Quinn floral cape dress and a green and black tiered Erdem gown complete with wide-brimmed hat and oversized pink bow, among other magical looks.

And while she wore black to the Met Gala (with the frame of a painting over her head), she chose to lighten it up for the after parties like this glittery Sally La Pointe jumpsuit, Tracee Ellis Ross style.

Cate Blanchett – Private dinner for ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette?’

I know this is super cliched but I have to say it. If you’re into fashion and you don’t know anything about Cate Blanchett or her style, you must be living under a rock. This woman oozes fashion in every fiber of her being and every year she turns it up a notch, without making it look weird or classless. Whether it’s a sharp pantsuit or a printed Louis Vuitton look, Cate Blanchett knows what looks good on her. And she knows how to make us take notice.

This month alone, she wore a blue corduroy blazer from Mango with matching blue knickers. And in October, she donned an embellished Armani jumpsuit which I call colorful for its unique beadwork. She recycled that look from 2014.

She’s all about the power suit (see the white Fendi above). And she’s not afraid to take the suit (or black) up a notch as she did when she wore a look from the Alexander McQueen Fall 2019 collection. It included blue satin sleeves added to a blazer.

Best Dressed Lupita Nyong'o  2019 fountainof30
Lupita Nyong’o – Golden Globes 2019

When Lupita Ny’ongo first burst on to the scene in 2013 as a supporting actor in 12 Years A Slave (for which she won the Oscar), she immediately became one to watch on the fashion red carpet. This was because of her colorful looks. Indeed, Nyong’o continues to catch our eye with inspiring outfits and pops of color as she did a year ago as part of the Black Panther ensemble cast.

This year, Nyong’o wrote a children’s book that became a New York Times bestseller, and she continued her fashion prowess at many an event. Sure, she had more muted looks this year than we are used to seeing from her. But there were outfits that proved she still had IT, whatever that IT is. Her Givenchy Spring 2020 halter gown featuring green, orange, and dark pink tones looked amazing. Besides, she’s certainly not afraid to wear colorful makeup. She can pull off blue or green eyeshadow better than anyone I know.

She also knows how to liven it up with colorful accessories. Remember that neon yellow Toccin Resort outfit with the pink Alexandre Birman sandals? She paired the statement-making look with a rainbow colored headband that really oomphed up her ensemble.

Also, her blue column Calvin Klein dress at the Golden Globes was everything we talk about when it comes to this year’s colorful, showstopping looks. They may seem just a little bit crazy but the celebrities can pull them off.
