Basic Black is Back In A Big Way for Spring/Summer 2024

Now that we are officially into the spring season, it’s time to kick your spring wardrobe into high gear. I know in some areas, though it still may not feel like spring (it was snowing here in Chicago a few days ago), but it’s still a good idea to get in the spring mindset. If you are still struggling to let go of your wintry weather color palette, don’t fret, basic black is one of the spring’s must-have trends. So, you can rest assured, transitioning into the new season wearing the color that is normally reserved for the winter will have you perfectly on trend for the spring.

Basic Black Dresses

If dresses are your spring vibe, I’ve got you covered.. Shirtdresses seem to be the go-to staple for the season. If you are trying out the basic black color trend, consider this cap-sleeved shirt dress from Anthropologie. I love the details and the gold hardware. The way this was styled on the model is exactly how I would do it. If you are looking for something similar at a more affordable price point, you can look for this dress from Gap. It still has the same feminine silhouette as the previous option, minus the gold hardware, but you can add your own metal accessories to compliment your personal style.

For a different, but still relaxed look. I found this poplin mini dress that looks super easy to wear. You can just throw it on and be on your way. Add any jacket, blazer, or cardigan you like to showcase your own flair, and dress it up or down depending on your shoes and accessories. It’s a no muss, no fuss option I would wear over and over again.

Basic Black Tops

I tend to stock up on items that aren’t only in basic colors, but also in basic silhouettes, and I know that’s no fun at all. If you are trying this color trend for the spring, look for light and airy details that will offset the darker color. This mesh top is fun and sexy and the perfect way to show off some skin in a subtle way. I think this would look so fresh worn with army green cargo pants and pair of kitten heels. If showing skin isn’t your vibe, you can go with either this cap sleeve tiered ruffle sleeve top or this satin ruffle tank. Both are ultra feminine and even though they are a dark color in basic black, the airy ruffle details make them warm weather approved.

Basic Black Bottoms

Now that we’ve got tops covered, let’s figure out the bottoms. I love a monochromatic look and wearing black on black in the spring is something that I would be into. You can pair either or these options with the tops listed above. However, if you aren’t into a full-on black outfit, you can wear these options with anything else on top: light colors, prints, denim, whatever you want! The first option that I want to show you is this lovely pair of basic black, linen-blend trousers. I think every woman should have a pair like this in her closet. They’re definitely a wardrobe staple, and I’m really digging the classic pleating on this pair.

If skirts are your preferred bottom in the spring, I found this chiffon pleated skirt that can really be worn for any season or occasion. I would probably dress this down with a white tank top, classic denim jacket and a pair of clean white sneakers.

Basic Black Shoes

I can’t let you go without talking about shoes. I tend to gravitate toward more colorful shoes, but it’s always a necessity to have some go-to black options in your closet. Here are two great pairs that you can pick up and they will work for you with multiple looks throughout the entire season. Take a look at this patent leather loafer and this wedge slip-on. Both are from DSW and both are at a great price point of $69.99.

Expert Styling Tips

  1. This is one trend to splurge on. Basic black, though trending for spring, will never go out of style. This is a truly timeless evergreen color that you will wear over and over again. Don’t be afraid to shell out a few extra dollars to get the better brands or the items made from finer fabrics. They will last you throughout the years.
  2. You can accessorize across the spectrum. Even though basic black is just that: basic, don’t think you have to play it up using accessories. If you’re into bold statement pieces in bright colors and unexpected material, by all means, go for it. Those will look so fun and playful with your basic black. However, if you stick to subtle and dainty pieces like gold studs and thin layering chains, your look will be sexy and sophisticated too.
  3. This trend pairs well with others. Basic black is such a great trend to try with other spring trends. So don’t be afraid so try it with shiny or metallic apparel pairings, clothing with volume or other trending colors like white, lilac and taupe.
